Title: UT played 4 walk-on DBs against Oregon
Post by: Creek Walker on September 16, 2013, 02:33:50 EDT
Wasn't really aware of that until Jimmy Hyams pointed it out. Is this the thinnest roster UT has ever had, at least in the modern era?

On a mostly unrelated note, Hyams is of the opinion that UT will open up the QB competition this week in practice.

Arnold, Swafford, Juin, and who?

As for the QB race, I'll believe it when I see it but Worley is not going to win games for us. I think to some degree Butch is protecting the younger guys but the time for that may be at an end.

He didn't name names. And by the 3rd quarter my eyeballs were glossed over so I can't say who the 4th one was.

I knew we were playing too many walk-ons, but didn't know 4 of them were DB's.

I heard somewhere that we only have 2 players from Kiffin's recruiting class and we know Dooley didn't really burn up the recruiting trail, so we are extremely thin.

I do believe CBJ is the answer if we can have the patience.

I think he must have been off by one there. I'm not sure there even is a 4th walkon DB. But all three of those walkons played when the game was still in some doubt, and the fact that we are in a position to need to do that is very sad.

Arnold, Swafford, Juin, and Toney - although I don't think Toney is a walk-on any more.

The 2 or 3 times we had the backup safeties (Moore and Arnold) in the game in the 2/3rd quarters they had receivers open everywhere.

It seemed like every 3rd series Martinez put in the backups

Coleman played ok, got burned on the backside fly once when he took the flare and the safety didn't come over and cover.
Sutton got exposed but made a couple of good plays.
The nichol guys didn't play well against their scheme

Not a good afternoon for the secondary (worse IMO for the LBs)

I wonder if there was an element of "games out of hand, let's give these guys a look".

The only positives I saw were that Randolph appears to be more or less full speed and played pretty well, and that our young starting CB (McNeil?) had a couple good moments in the first quarter after having a great game vs. WKU.

Other than that....(shudder)

That many walk on DB's vs. Oregon.  Sheesh.  I'm just glad they called off the dogs in the 3rd qtr.   :bawl:
