If you touch it before it goes over and it doesn't go over but your body does is that a touchback? Only way I see that being called a touchback.

From replays in the stadium I think CMac caused the bal to touch the goal line before he pushed it back - all his momentum was to the goal line. I had a good view (7th row in that end zone opposite side of the goal post so I had an angle) and real time I thought it should have been a TB.

From my understanding of the rule, they blew it. The ball entered the EZ after the USC player kicked out

Why no review of the USC non-fumblec?

That should have been a TD, the USC guy touched a live ball

It shouldn't have been a TD, because once a cover guy touches it, the offense is no longer liable once they make contact with it. However, the officials totally blew the call. I would argue that the ball should have been blown dead before McDowell ever touched it. It had already been touched by another player (don't remember who) and had come to a complete stop just outside the goal line. At that point, the play is over. Still, McDowell did NOT cause the ball to cross the goal line. I don't have confidence that the SEC will ever get a replay correct, but the infuriating part was they confirmed the call on the field. NWIH that there was sufficient video evidence to confirm that call.
Just a completely bungled situation by the worst officials of any Power 5 conference (which I've been saying for years).

We had a player touch the ball before the slid cluster......The ball was touched at the 1 foot line and should have been a dead ball there! They were harping on the slide....but the ball was touched before that. Total miss call.

One of the biggest boneheaded plays I have ever seen - TOTAL LACK OF DISCIPLINE. I agree with Swamp, it looked like he may have idiotically pushed it thru the goaline before the USC player "kicked" it. Creek brings up a good point on the ball coming to rest, except if it came to rest, it was only at rest for a split second. Usually the refs wait a count before blowing it "dead" I'm not sure what is in the rule book, and not sure "dead" ball in that situation is even reviewable. My gut tells me it was the right call when all is said and done. We have had just too many of these incredible bungles this season - Hurd's fumble at the Goaline, offsides on critical 4th downs, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. UGH.

That's what I've been saying -- the first player down touched the ball at the 1 foot line -- the ball should have been called dead at that point, before the next guy slid to the ball! On replays they totally missed that!

Exactly right....But the announcers and the replay booth was zoned in on the slide and it seems most UT fans are doing the same......We had a player touch the ball well before the slide. Dead ball right there. Period.

Go back and watch the tape...it clearly came to rest at the 1.5 foot line. Was it there long enough? Don't know. I haven't had a chance to go back and slo mo it yet, but I will later today.

OK, a hypothetical.....
Assume the ball had not been touched prior to the slide. Is the slide not irrelevant anyway if the initial touch was before the end zone? In college, it is the ball and not the player, at least as I understand it. Can a player in the end zone not bat the ball backwards and have it downed at the 3, or 2, or 1 in college football?

How can I go back and watch the tape when I already deleted that sucker with extreme prejudice!

From the video I saw on the play, the ball never broke the plane until it was kicked. There was never any irrefutable evidence otherwise. If the SEC office says that his momentum carried the ball into the end zone and they ruled accordingly, then either I completely misunderstand the rule (that's entirely possible), or they botched it.

If the ball is touched in the field of play, yet still crosses the plane of the goal line, it's a touchback. However, once the ball has been touched and it's forward momentum has stopped, the play is over. So even if CMac causes it to touch the goal line, the play should've been over...and every camera angle makes it pretty clear that the ball didn't touch the goal line after he made contact with it.
