I finally gave in and bought the Star Wars collection on blu-ray. Any other blu-rays that are "must-haves" that you guys own?
I know I'm going to get ripped for this but I still have never seen any LOTR movies. But I see the extended versions of the blu ray collection was finally released. I'm tempted to buy it without having even seen them, going by how they are described in the same vein as Star Wars in regards to their epicness.
Did you call your doctor. I hope it's not contagious.

Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Need help in selecting TV and sound system.

I have never had a big screen or a sound system so I don't know anything about what is good or not.
Looking for 55" for the LR and between 35" to 40" for the bedroom. I want HD, but after that I am clueless. Not for gaming but it could have a system hooked up from time to time. I am putting 4 speakers in the wall and a sub beside the TV. What brand components and what capabilities I don't know.
Price does matter, I repeat price does matter.
I like my Samsungs. The only thing is the sound quality is not the greatest (but this may be true of other flat panel TV's). If you are adding a sound system then that does not matter. If you have potential for some glare from windows or lights, I'd recommend looking at LCD's as they do not produce much glare. Otherwise a plasma or LED may be better. Below 40", I would say that you would not see the difference between 720p and 1080p unless you are using a cable box/DVR. I'm not sure how this works for all cable boxes and DVR's etc., but I have a 720p 32" LCD connected to my Knology/Scientific Atlanta DVR. On at least some if not all of the channels, some of the screen is cutoff. It is as if you are seeing the center 720p part of the 1080p image. It can be annoying when watching sports as some of the score box may be cut off. I did not notice this when I had this TV hooked straight to cable, but I only got 5 HD channels like that. I plan to upgrade to a bigger 1080p TV to go with my DVR at some point so it won't matter then.

Another game against a ranked opponent and we're in it at halftime.
It's going to be tough to win this one. It's difficult to have a consistent offense with a true freshman with zero experience.
But.......once again, we're still in it at halftime.
Oh, one more thing. Da'Rick has to catch the ball. He's got to help out this freshman.
Dooley is getting out coached in this one so far.

Yea I know don't strain anything........ Anyway I went back and looked at our roster again, then I looked at all the other SEC teams rosters. We are younger than any unit in the conference on either side of the ball save Auburn's and LSU's defensive units. This tells me two things. First our defensive talent is not nearly what LSU has and they may be even better next year on defense. Second thing is that at every level starting from middle school on up it is the teams with the oldest players that are the best typically. In college just like highs school it is a junior and senior dominated sport. We have very few of them and even fewer who are SEC talents. While we may not like youth as an excuse it is a fact for us. We are younger than everyone else and our depth is even younger. The old saying about a player suffering a sophomore slump came about for a reason and we are playing a lot of them so multiply that issue tenfold. It is just going to take time to do it right. Next year should be a little better as we will be mostly juniors but their backups will be sophs and freshmen again. That is why I think it will take until 2013 or 2014 to compete for the SECC. That is if we can get rid of this dark cloud of doom that is raining on every parade we try to have. Hopefully with Hamilton gone that will get better as he seemed to bring doom to every program he was in charge of. While LSU may be even better on defense next year, they will only maringally be better. In other words, they only have so much room for improvement. I contend that part of the difference between 3-star and 4 and 5 star recruits is that more 4 and especially 5-star recruits come in ready to play earlier. I think that a lot of the players that Dooley has brought in so far will probably need more time to develop, but may be able to end up being top players. The other issue is that LSU will likely have more players leave early because they have more that can. It is too early to expect Dooley to compete wit LSU and bama. It is also unreasonable to expect Dooley to be able to bring in top 5 recruiting classes at this point and time as well. I hope that over time and with success on the field we will see UT's recruiting class rating rise from year to year.

We'll disagree on that point, I guess. There's no way UGA called the dogs off. UT's defense gave up a couple of big plays that led to UGA scores and played solid at other times. There isn't a coach in America who is foolish enough to call the dogs off with a two TD lead.
Since Johnny is not coaching anymore you may be correct.

If there's one thing TN fans aint, it's patient.
VOL fans have generally been patient in the past. Otherwise, both Majors and Fulmer would have been gone sooner than they were. Indeed patience is running thin right now, but VOL fans have been waiting a long time.

Sports / VTTW Message Board / Ticket advice.

on: September 09, 2011, 10:20:00 EDT

My two sons and I are driving up from Huntsville for the game tomorrow. We do not have tickets. Where is the best place to pick some up? Do you think there will be plenty available? Any other advice?
Also, where is the tailgate as we might stop by for a moment.
Thanks in advance.

I agree with CobbWebb. I live in Athens and have likened Richt's run in the second half of 2007 to Fulmer's the same year, an aberration that buys them more time. The main difference being that Richt was at the time only 2 years removed from winning the SEC Championship and was fresh off beating rival Florida, (remember UGA has only beaten Florida 3 times in the last 21 games so a win goes a long way.) If they lose to South Carolina they will be 14-14 in their last 28 games and I think the players will bail on him, I know the fans will. In fact, a loss to UT in October could be the actual nail in the coffin.
Would that be a hobnail? Hopefully so.

Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Top 5 SEC football rivalries
|
on: September 01, 2011, 03:17:34 EDT

This is motivated by a discussion on the VS last night in which a couple of us had to defend the Third Saturday in October as a significant rivalry. So that got me thinking this morning . . . what are the Top 5 best rivalries in the SEC? Another way to look at it . . . if the SEC has to change its scheduling, what are the top 5 series it should bend over backward not to interrupt?
Mine:
1) The Iron Bowl (Auburn - Alabama)
2) The Egg Bowl (Mississippi - Mississippi State)
3) The Third Saturday in October (Tennessee - Alabama)
4) The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party (Georgia - Florida)
5) The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry (Georgia - Auburn)
Personally I think the SEC would lose too much tradition if it is forced to schedule away any of the above, so I hope it works out a system that can keep them all. Thoughts?
I think your list is spot on. The instate nature of the top two is significant and too much for the Third (Fourth) Saturday to overcome.

1. VOLS Football (because I was born this way) 2. VOLS Football (see #1) 3. Colts (my first favorite NFL team because I liked the horseshoe on the helmets when I watched them in the '69 Super Bowl - I was 4) 4. Phil Mickelson (fellow lefty golfer and he seems to be a good guy) 5. Braves (in the beginning they were second to the Reds due to both being the closest MLB teams and the Reds were better in the 70's, then stuck with the Braves exclusively in the 80's due to being able to watch them all the time on TBS)
Bonus: 6. Whoever is playing Alabama (no explanation needed) 7. Whoever is playing Florida (see #6)

I don't often read the volnation boards (though I do during camp to get practice info) but this thread starter was on there and I thought it was a great question. You can change only one play in UT history. Which play would it be, and why?
1985 if the VOLS make the field goal against gatech and win the game, and everything else remains the same, we win the NC that year (a good chance anyway). That tie and the tie against UCLA that year were totally inexcusable, and did cost an NC.

If you mean Austin Johnson, he was not underage, basically had an open container and was acting up. It won't amount to much.
If this is the only incident this offseason, I consider it a great year.
