Title: Lance Thompson's comment on Curt Maggitt
Post by: Volznut on August 15, 2011, 02:37:16 EDT
"Everybody knew this kid was a special talent, but in 25 years of coaching, this kid is an elite freshman."

 :wow:

And Lance has seen some pretty special linebackers.

I love the comment..........except for that one word.......freshman.

He will likely play well and apparently his talent level is off the charts.

I love it but I am trying to temper my expectations as well.

Were I not so lazy I'd pull my comment I put about him just after signing day. I know nothing about football, but he jumped out big-time.

I hope this is the case.  It's been a long, long time since we had an elite LB.  I mean guys like Burnett, Mayo, and Reveiz were good, but I wouldn't put them at the level of anyone in the '98 group.

I would put Mayo in that group, but only since he went pro.

More Lance Thompson on Maggitt:

Quote
"You're going to have to have a plan for that guy, because he's a special guy coming off the edge," Thompson said. "Curt doesn't do things right 100 percent of the time. But his athleticism, his initial quickness and acceleration are really elite in college football."

Mayo is easily in that group, but otherwise we haven't been that great.

I think Burnett and Mayo were both better players than either Raynoch or EMo... but the strength of the '98 group was having three NFL caliber linebackers on the field at the same time.

Same thing with EB... EB was better than anybody in the '98 defensive backfield... but the strength of that group was having a NFL caliber shutdown corner in Goodrich on the field at the same time with an NFL caliber safety in Grant who could take away half the field. EB only had that his last year with Janzen and Janzen was a frosh.

I'd put Burnett right up there too.  He was drafted by Dallas in 2005, went to SD, and is currently on Miami's roster.  I don't think you stay in the NFL that long without either elite talent or elite work ethic.  He's obviously not had the impact in the NFL that Mayo has had, though.

He was a great player at UT. Many times he was a one man wrecking crew. He singlehandedly beat Vandy one year. The rest of the team around him sucked.
