Title: Question for y'al since Baseball season will start in a few weeks
Post by: WoodstockVol on March 15, 2012, 10:48:05 EDT
What's are y'alls opinion about Baseball going to two wildcard teams in the NL and AL? I like the idea since the Braves will be in the Playoffs every year now!

I don't mind more wildcards, but I wish they'd go back to two divisions in each league.  Three divisions has ruined the game, IMO.  There have been too many ~.500 teams win weak divisions and get to the playoffs.  A couple of them actually won the WS.  The regular season is a 162 game grind.  So how is it right that a team like the '06 Cardinals can win 82 games, win their clunker of a division by default, get hot in the last week of the regular season, and ride it all the way to a World Championship?  Under the old format, they wouldn't have made the playoffs in the first place.  The system as it stands too often rewards teams who play 5 months of mediocre baseball and then just happen to get hot at the right time.  If that's what MLB wants, they should just reduce the regular season to 20 games starting on September 1st. :frown:

I would also make all playoff series best of 7.  One good starting pitcher can practically win a 5 game series all by himself.  If you get to the playoffs with a deep rotation, you shouldn't be penalized by having to face someone like Justin Verlander twice in a 5 game set.  Make teams earn it by utilizing their entire roster.

I hate the ideal of Nov. baseball we will have it this year. 2013 they are suppose to adjust the timing. 2012 a strange fluke is the higher seed team will open the 1st round of playoffs @ the wildcard winning teams home field so if the Phillies win 100 games and Braves win 85 and win the wildcard round the Phillies woud possibly have 1 home game game 1 @ wild card winner game 2 @ wild card winner game 3 @ higher seed game  same with game 4 and 5. Possible a division winner is only gurantee 1 home game.

If they are going to have a wild card team then there should be 2.  The way it has been. it makes no difference for Boston and New York who wins the division and who is the wild card.  They are both treated the same in the post season, thus there was no incentive to compete for the div title.  Now that the 2 wild card teams will have to meet for a 1 game playoff, teams will be competing tooth and nail to avoid that.

OTOH, the season is already far, far too long and 4 teams a league work well IMO, without unecessarily extending the season, yet again
