Title: Dumb "Tech" (Gadget) Questions
Post by: murfvol on April 04, 2012, 09:48:09 EDT
1) What's the cheapest way to get home internet? I'm moving so if there's a way to cut the cord we'd like to do that. Can we use a wireless device as a hub or something?

2) I'm ditching the old set (19" Magnavox from 1999 thank you), but am not going nuts. What specs should I look for as far as refresh, resolution, etc. are concerned? Specific set info would also be appreciated. I'm not going bigger than 40" and may go 32".

Many thanks. I live in the stone age.

1) Depends on where you live and what kind of speed you need.

2) I'm behind on all the latest and greatest specs, but I'm loyal to Samsung brand tv's.

Glacial is a perfectly acceptable pace. We have AT&T's slowest DSL for now and that's fine.  That having been said I'd like to be able to utilize ESPN3 in the fall for extra events. That was easy in Nashville, but I'm not sure if it's available in Charlotte.

For some reason I couldn't watch March Madness on CBS' site so there's some seemingly arbitrary availability.

1.  Certain Android phones can act as wireless hubs.  This usually comes at an extra cost from your provider, but not if you root the phone.  Otherwise, DSL is probably the cheapest way to go.

2.  The standard for larger LCD/LED sets these days is 1080p resolution, and 120hz refresh rate (higher end sets now have 240hz).  But honestly, if you're looking at a TV less than 42", those things really aren't going to matter too much.  And at that size, the major manufacturers are pretty much putting out the same stuff.  They don't really start to differentiate themselves until you get to their mid to high end stuff.  Definitely stick with the major brands like Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, etc.  Don't get an off brand.  I would suggest you just look at them in the store and judge what looks best to you.  You can get a decent 32" these days for $300-400, sometimes even less on sale.  And don't buy in the store until you look at the same model online.  You can find some good deals on Amazon and other sites.

(1)  Hook into a wireless router in your new neighborhood......all you got to do is fire up the computer and then check your wireless access points around you....there will be four or five that are open and totally unsecured.  If you object to that then DSL is the cheapest way to go unless the cable company is offering you some deal at like 19.95 per month.  If so sign up at that price for 2 years dont let them do the six months then jack you deal!

(2)  Does your old 19" still get Andy Griffith in B & W?    Seriously go with at least 40" because you will love the bigger size when football season comes around...trust me!

I couldn't swipe it in good conscience, but I do appreciate everyone kicking in words of wisdom. I shall now head back to my cave and continue etching mastadons on the wall.
