Most excellent guitar picker and singer

A few years back he was one of The Three Pickers on a PBS special.

Sad loss. For those of us who love bluegrass music, it's been a rough couple of months. Earl Scruggs, the father of the three-finger style of banjo playing provided the foundation and was a huge influence to every banjo-player since, died two months ago and Doug Dillard (the banjo player in the Dillards who portrayed the family band the Darlings in the Andy Griffith Show) died recently as well.
