Title: A heartbreaking and frustrating story about a Memphis athlete
Post by: Clockwork Orange on June 08, 2012, 03:03:04 EDT
I read the print version this morning at work, and DJ at the VS posted the link (and the link has much more info, including some papers written by Dasmine and a graphical version of his transcript).

If you are interested in education, in college sports, or in the intersection of the two, you need to read this article. I am simultaneously sympathetic to a kid that obviously has a good heart and furious at the systems and structures that allowed him to get through high school and be one course away from a college degree. If you don't think some of this occurs at UT . . . or any school with D-I sports programs . . . you're mistaken. It's just a matter of how far it goes.

It just baffles me how student/athletes (alleged, anyway) get in to major universities in the first place.  That's really a sad story.
