Title: True or false: Penn State will field a varsity football team this fall Post by: Black Diamond Vol on July 01, 2012, 11:38:30 EDT I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they'll sit out at least this year, if not more.
These latest allegations are the most damaging yet, and there's still more to come, what with the multitude of civil suits. Against that backdrop, do they really want to have this program front and center on TV every Saturday? Remember Bruce Pearl's last season, when every TV broadcast of a Vols game became a referendum on Bruce himself? And that was over some freaking phone calls and some ribs. Now imagine what it would be like for a scandal of this magnitude. I say that PSU will pull the plug themselves, if the NCAA doesn't do it first. The old saying that there is no such thing as bad publicity may not apply here.

I think his pension needs to be divided and sent to the victims. I know it wouldn't amount to much considering how many boys he molested.
Title: Re: True or false: Penn State will field a varsity football team this fall Post by: 101stDad on July 02, 2012, 02:35:04 EDT There's no way they voluntarily suspend a football season. There is just way too much money involved. They have to play to get their cut of the conference TV and bowl revenue, and they have to have that to play for the rest of the athletic department.
Be it the right or wrong thing for them to do, that is the reality in this day and time. Title: Re: True or false: Penn State will field a varsity football team this fall Post by: Volznut on July 02, 2012, 02:54:10 EDT They're not going to sit out. Surprisingly, they're also putting together a really good recruiting class as well.

Be it the right or wrong thing for them to do, that is the reality in this day and time. I think they would have to weigh the loss of a season or two of football revenues vs. a long term drop in donations and research funding. It was reported this weekend that the 3 most powerful men at the university had been covering up Sandusky's actions since 1998. And again, this news cycle is only in its infancy. More damning details are sure to follow, and they'll probably still be coming out after the season is underway. And if they choose to play this season, those details will be getting 3+ hours of exclusive coverage on ESPN every Saturday. That can't be good for their endowment. Well if it's any consolation, it won't do him any good in prison. It will help take care of his wife is all. I can see leaving that in place for his family's sake. It's not their fault he did what he did. Title: Re: True or false: Penn State will field a varsity football team this fall Post by: SmokeyJoe on July 02, 2012, 07:09:16 EDT I will just say that the disconnect evident in the emails I have read is stunning! Wow! What a bunch of morons! Joe Paterno knew and aided in the cover up! Shameful!
