I think it goes back to when he was competing, made one bad play and got benched for the duration of his career. Now he wants to keep the competition going for seasons at a time. He just wasn't a very good offensive coordinator, or at least not a good offensive coordinator with a head coach who wouldn't let him coordinate and then used him as a scapegoat.
