Title: So McRae 1st team, Stokes 2nd team All-SEC Post by: Clockwork Orange on March 12, 2013, 07:21:06 EDT I try not to worry about this crap but there are three post players on the All-SEC 1st team and Stokes isn't one of them. Let's do a blind test, shall we?
Four post players: Player A: 12.4 points, 5.3 rebounds (1.4 OR, 3.9 DR), 0.8 blocks Player B: 10.5 points, 9.5 rebounds (2.7 OR, 6.8 DR), 4.4 blocks Player C: 12.4 points, 9.4 rebounds (3.8 OR, 5.6 DR), 1.2 blocks Player D: 13.8 points, 8.8 rebounds (3.1 OR, 5.7 DR), 0.7 blocks If you were to take three of these players for your All-SEC 1st team, which one would you leave off? Player A is Florida's Erik Murphy, who was voted 1st team All-SEC over Jarnell Stokes (Player C). FWIW, Players B and D are Nerlens Noel (Kentucky) and Johnny O'Bryant III (LSU).
I think there's a really easy explanation for why Murphy is in there when he clearly doesn't belong based on performance. Coaches thought the best team ought to have at least one player make 1st team All-SEC. That's a stupid reason, but I guarantee that's why. IMO this is something that probably should not factor into it, but it does. In a similar way, it seems the sportswriters seem to try and make sure every team has at least one player. If it was truly objective they would just vote for the players and not consider what team they are on, but I think unofficially they try to favor the best teams while also spreading it around. |
