Or, as I read in an article recently, the "P-38 Mustang."  Ugh!   :banghead:

I helped restore a Lightning for the CAF when I was stationed in LA.  A year or so later it crashed during an airshow. :bawl:
Kelly Johnson didn't miss on too many designs. :thumbup:

My grandfather was a turret gunner in a B-17...til he had enough senority to move to a side gunner.. He told some gruesome stories of what happened to guys who were shot in a turret....usually involved shoveling the man out. He said he was lucky because the first mission he flew after moving positions, the new belly gunner caught a bullet and.....not much was left of him. Guess i liked those the best...and the men who flew in them.

40 miles from me in Halls, Tn. is an old B-17 WWII training base and museum. The base was the largest B-17 training base in America. If you are ever in the area it's worth the visit.

Have flown in and out of there many times ....many years ago.

What's really neat about the Red Bull "P-38" is that it's an early model (actually the F-5 photo-recce version of the P-38F). Beautiful aircraft!

Those propellers freaked me out.  :thumbup:

Cameras can make spinning propellers look VERY strange.   :biggrin:

What was it that Pappy Boyington flew?  I thought they looked cool but heard that it wasnt the best fighter we had.  

That would be the other plane in the video, the Chance Vought F4U Corsair.  Love that plane.  In fact, the P-38 and Corsair are two of my favorites.   :thumbup:

Believe it or not, I had one of my better landings that day, and there was an aerobatic pilot friend at the hold short line when I arrived.  He didn't know it was me but said later that it was one of the best landings he had seen there that weekend.  :biggrin:  So there!   :tongue:  :wink:  :tongue:  I took a rusty pilot course recently and hope to get back in the air before the end of the summer.  We'll see.

I was going to ask if you had flown recently.  While it is expensive I due miss flying, a lot.

Also, it was P-38s that flew the  mission to shoot down Yamamoto after a very long range flight.

The P-38 we restored was a Lima model.

That's what I miss most from leaving DC area. Doing volunteer work at Smithsonian Air and Space, I got to communicate with a lot of folks all over the world who were doing A/C restoration work. When we visited our niece in Dallas, I got to schmooze with the guys keeping up the B-24 for the CAF. Wife and niece were bored, but patient while I spent an hour talking shop! :thumbup:
