Ugh! :banghead: I helped restore a Lightning for the CAF when I was stationed in LA. A year or so later it crashed during an airshow. :bawl:Kelly Johnson didn't miss on too many designs. Title: Re: For WWII Aviation buffs - The P-38 is my favorite A/C from WWII (K. Johnson!) Post by: Hollerboy on June 14, 2013, 02:49:39 EDT My grandfather was a turret gunner in a B-17...til he had enough senority to move to a side gunner.. He told some gruesome stories of what happened to guys who were shot in a turret....usually involved shoveling the man out. He said he was lucky because the first mission he flew after moving positions, the new belly gunner caught a bullet and.....not much was left of him. Guess i liked those the best...and the men who flew in them.

If you are ever in the area it's worth the visit. http://www.dyaab.us/dyaabmuseum.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyersburg_Army_Air_Base Title: Re: For WWII Aviation buffs - The P-38 is my favorite A/C from WWII (K. In fact, the P-38 and Corsair are two of my favorites. Title: Re: For WWII Aviation buffs - The P-38 is my favorite A/C from WWII (K. Johnson!) He didn't know it was me but said later that it was one of the best landings he had seen there that weekend. So there!   I took a rusty pilot course recently and hope to get back in the air before the end of the summer. We'll see. Title: Re: For WWII Aviation buffs - The P-38 is my favorite A/C from WWII (K. Johnson!) Post by: Navol on June 15, 2013, 03:26:13 EDT The P-38 we restored was a Lima model. That's what I miss most from leaving DC area. Doing volunteer work at Smithsonian Air and Space, I got to communicate with a lot of folks all over the world who were doing A/C restoration work. When we visited our niece in Dallas, I got to schmooze with the guys keeping up the B-24 for the CAF. Wife and niece were bored, but patient while I spent an hour talking shop! |
