Title: The word "winningest" is used a lot in sports Post by: Volznut on July 09, 2013, 04:27:08 EDT and it does appear to be a legitimate word, but wow, I hate it. I wonder if it was just incorporated since so many people use it.
Most winning sounds a lot better. Title: Re: The word "winningest" is used a lot in sports Post by: Creek Walker on July 09, 2013, 04:49:50 EDT How about the word "scholly" as scholarship slang in sports? We have a veterinarian here who hates that word so much that I work it into a headline whenever possible.

We have a veterinarian here who hates that word so much that I work it into a headline whenever possible. well, that's just a shortened version. The word "winningest" just appears gramatically wrong! Title: Re: The word "winningest" is used a lot in sports Post by: Clockwork Orange on July 09, 2013, 04:59:34 EDT Word usage is bad, but I think grammar will always bother me more. Especially bad usage that eventually becomes accepted.
You don't even want me to get started on the demise of the Oxford comma. Title: Re: The word "winningest" is used a lot in sports Post by: murfvol on July 09, 2013, 05:21:52 EDT "Winningest" does indeed sound odd, but since no one asked here are my peeves.
1) "The Peyton Mannings, the Reggie Whites..." Uh, how did those guys become plural? 2) "I'm an alumni." All your personalities attended the same school? 3) "I have two questions. Who do you think will start at quarterback today? and Go Vols!" Title: Re: The word "winningest" is used a lot in sports Post by: Clockwork Orange on July 09, 2013, 05:32:43 EDT 3) I have two questions. "Who do you think will start at quarterback today? and Go Vols!" "I'll hang up and listen." Title: Re: The word "winningest" is used a lot in sports Post by: Creek Walker on July 09, 2013, 06:00:19 EDT Nothing bugs me more than the mindless cliches that are so prevalent in sports . . . even though I'm guilty of it myself.
"ALOHA MEANS GOODBYE!!!" was okay the first 15 or so times a player broke free for a touchdown run in a game played in Hawaii, but then it got kinda stale... Title: Re: The word "winningest" is used a lot in sports Post by: murfvol on July 09, 2013, 06:42:28 EDT How many Hawaii games do you watch Creek? I'll hang up and listen.
Also, I think "irregardless" deserves a shout-out. One that always got my sister was "The Phil Fulmer Dressing Room Show". Someone didn't quite think out that one. Title: Re: The word "winningest" is used a lot in sports Post by: Black Diamond Vol on July 09, 2013, 06:48:19 EDT "Trickeration" drives me crazy. :banghead:

It doesn't even have to be a Hawaii game anymore... Title: Re: The word "winningest" is used a lot in sports Post by: murfvol on July 09, 2013, 07:22:57 EDT "Trickeration" is pretty close to "Winningest" and "I'll hang up and listen" in use.

Otherwise why would so many idiots be doing it? It's unrelated, but there's a movement out there to eliminate the apostrophe. Think about the consequences for a second. Title: Re: The word "winningest" is used a lot in sports Post by: BanditVol on July 13, 2013, 02:46:10 EDT I agree with almost all, but I like "trickeration", so long as it's used only for a truly slick move. I haven't really heard it that much...but maybe I just watch different games.
