Isn't one Charles Davis? I think he does a good job.

Yeah, Charles Davis is one of my favorites.   :dunno:

Both of these announcers are giving OSU the reach around.

I'll be honest: Give me Gus Johnson and Charles Davis over our SEC celebrity crew of Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson any day of the week.

Concur. Verne's past his prime.

I'd agree but they were GUSHING for o'cryo state in the early going.  To hear them talk the whineeye QB was the greatest thing since sliced bread, unstoppable.  Tha was just the opening gambit, it got worse.

I like Charles but Gus gets on my nerves.  He acts like every play is the greatest play ever.  Just gets old after about 4 or 5 times.  Verne needs to retire.  But I like Gary.  He knows his football.

There was one "Oh my God!" on one, routine o'cryo state play where the QB made a cut.    There wasn't even a need for a jock cleanup call ...

Agree.  I like them both.

Danielson irritates me more than Verne. He comes across as arrogant and overbearing.

Different strokes for different folks-thank you Sly Stone-but I like Danielson and think there is no commentator as knowledgeable and analytically gifted as he. You hear more in-depth and insightful takes from him than you do from all others combined. While his voice is sometimes monotone and he can grate on you when you disagree with him, I appreciate his overall work immensely.

My favorite are Brad Nessler and Todd Blackledge.

As a tandem, I agree. It's a shame Nessler hasn't unseated Musburger as the ABC/ESPN no.1 announcer. His talent is going to waste on lesser games.

Same here. I'm so-so on Blackledge, I guess, but a big fan of Nessler. If we're never going to get back the team of Franklin/Gottfried, that combo is as good as it gets.

I think Gottfried must have had a stroke or something.  I thought he was retired, but I checked out a UTC game on ESPN3 a few weeks ago and he was doing color, only his speech was slurred and very slow.  Sad. :frown:

Yep....Before Nessler and Blackledge my favorite by far was Franklin and Gottfried.....they also had the tall blonde head guy doing the sideline coverage I liked too. He committed suicide....IIRC he was in some kind of trouble with the IRS.

Franklin got in trouble with things he said to Holly Rowe and one other female reported....ESPN pretty much demoted him. He, like me isn't a big fan of females doing sideline reporting.

Holy crap...we agree on something.  I do think Danielson is knowledgeable, but over the last year or so he seems to pick a favorite early and stick with them.  Almost as if he doesn't want to be proved wrong...

One advantage Danielson has over someone like Blackledge is he knows he won't have to cover but just 14 teams-the SEC. That does give him the chance to really review tape and know these teams like the back of his hand before and during the season. Blackledge, and others, are really clueless as to who they will be covering during any given year, and it's just a week to week thing for them which really cuts down on their time to really review tape and talk to those in the know on these teams. However, even given that big advantage for Danielson in preparation time, his analytical skills appear superior to his competition.
