Title: Cuonzo Martin is toast Post by: Volznut on February 28, 2014, 01:45:21 EST I won't copy and paste, but based on some things Hubbs is saying, barring a miraculous run, CCM will likely be let go. Hart is not likely to invest in him through 2016, and he certainly wouldn't bring him back for one more year.
I'd say the chances we have a new coach next year are very high. Likely not Pearl, but we can hope. Title: Re: Cuonzo Martin is toast Post by: VinnieVOL on February 28, 2014, 02:33:22 EST As much as I want to BBB, reality is that it's really not going to happen like Herb and others have said all along. A lot of Vol fans are setting themselves up for disappointment (like Gruden), and have convinced themselves an online petition is going to make some sort if difference. And I'm afraid that whoever our next coach is won't get the support he deserves from a portion of our fan base, which is unfortunate A lot of posters on other Vol boards (not here on VTTW) really need to get a grip.

Yeah, I've long thought that the chance of Bruce coming back was less than 5% . . . people have gotten excited by all the talk and there is more pressure to go that route now, but I highly doubt that's going to happen. As for the fans not supporting the new guy, I think that will be short lived. I think that was even true for Butch because of the Gruden disappointment, but it was short lived because Butch started doing the right things immediately to bring the fanbase back. As long as the hire is good, the fans will give him a chance (though everything rides on him winning some games relatively early). Just please, please Dave . . . make a good hire. Title: Re: Cuonzo Martin is toast Post by: Volznut on February 28, 2014, 02:48:40 EST It's all about Winning. Martin is not moving the program forward, and who really thinks we will go on some kind of miraculous run? Thus he has to go. It's a business decision. Who we hire to replace him is Hart's call and his legacy will be partly defined by it. He gets paid a lot of money to make those decisions. If not Bruce, fine, hire someone who will come in and maximize our talent, get some new talent, and win. Winning will cure all.

EDIT: In no way am I hoping we don't make the NCAAs in order to fire CCM....It's not fair to the kids working their butts off. But if we do get in and CCM is retained is gonna get ugly next season. At one point against Miss. State we had 60 points and 49 of those points came from Stokes, Maymon and Mac. who will be gone after this season. Yep..when your rivals wants you to keep your coach, it's a sure sign he needs to go. It was expected that not only would this team get to the NCAAT, but be a decent seed and advance. So I don't think barely making it, if we do (and that is in doubt), means a thing. Hart has to ask himself about the future of the program. If there's one person's opinion that I, as a UT fan, value over all others, it's Kevin Stallings. That reminds me of when we fired Buzz Peterson, and his old buddy Roy Williams said he was only let go because we weren't selling as much "dadburn popcorn", and that no one we hired would be able to do a better job. Then we hired Bruce Pearl. So...yeah. STFU, Roy. And you too, Cue ball. :bird: Title: Re: Cuonzo Martin is toast Post by: BanditVol on March 01, 2014, 06:43:58 EST While I am not overwhelmed by Cuonzo, and think we could be doing better, let's face it, Bruce was a tough act to follow for anyone. He took us to unprecedented levels, with the possible exception of one of the "Earnie-Bernie" years. That level of success is hard to match, especially since it was unexpected and Bruce also is highly charismatic, which CCM is definitely not.
In the grand scheme of things, he's probably the best coach other than Bruce since Kevin...was it O'Neil? The guy that kept cussing all the time. Green had a better record, but arguably more talent, and everyone hated him anyway. But CCM is definitely better than Buzz, not that that's saying much. I personally don't think CCM is a horrible coach...just very mediocre. And there is no way a mediocre guy can follow Bruce. I think even a good coach would have struggled. He's a little below mediocre, and is a pretty bad offensive coach. We need better than that to compete. It doesn't matter if he followed Bruce - we as UT fans should have high standards. But that's not a bad thing I guess. Bruce raised our expectations, and that has to be good. Title: Re: Cuonzo Martin is toast Post by: volsboy on March 01, 2014, 10:37:13 EST What puzzles me is that the SEC in general is mediocre in basketball. I still haven't figured out why. Why doesn't more quality players sign with SEC schools. UK and UF are the only schools that can consistently field a contender. The other schools are hit and miss. Literally. So Cuonzo at UT fits in the norm of the conference.
