Title: About Apple's new smart watch
Post by: Black Diamond Vol on September 10, 2014, 02:55:06 EDT
Admittedly, I'm kind of a watch geek.  If I ever win the lottery, I'm going to collect high-end watches.  So while the idea of a smart watch may not appeal to many, I want one.  Or maybe more than one.

This is a relatively new category of tech, but smart watches have evolved design-wise in the 18 months or so they've been on the market.  The early models were ugly square things on rubber straps.  Not exactly something you'd want to wear in a formal setting.  But recently, Motorola and LG have unveiled more attractive rounded models:

Those are hot.  I'd wear either one of them anywhere.  But I was really looking forward to seeing what apple had up its sleeve.  After all, this was the company that has historically melded tech with design in ways that no one had ever done before.  The home of wizard designer Jony Ive.  This would be their first all-new product in four years, and since they are relatively late to this party, they've had some time to learn from their competitors' mistakes.  So surely their watch would be the most beautiful of them all, right?  Well...

Sorry, but that thing looks like something straight out of 1986.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I really think that's tacky.

Let's face it- at this point, no one is going to buy a smart watch for the functionality.  They all have to link to your phone via bluetooth, so is there really much more convenience in accessing your apps via your wrist vs. your phone?  No.  The only real differentiator between them is design, and IMO Apple is seriously lagging behind their Android competitors in that regard.  Have they lost their mojo without Steve Jobs?

Yeah they have lost some mojo for sure. Samsung has really put a dent into apple, and Apple is, in some cases, playing catch up (bigger screen). I still like the iphone better so I will likely get one, but I don't want a smart watch.

I think the concept of a smart watch is kinda tacky in general. I mean, they're kinda neat, and I'd wear and use one if it were given to me, but I'm not gonna spend $300+ for something I wouldn't wear in a formal setting anyway.

With that said, in Apple's defense,  that picture selects three of the tackiest designs imaginable. There are much better looking Apple Watch designs than that.

Honestly, the main attraction to me at this point is being able to download new faces.  Buy a couple different bands (maybe one leather and one metal), and you can completely change the look of your watch for just about any occasion.  Maybe (probably) someone will design some useful apps for them in the future, but right now there's really nothing you can do with the watch that you can't already do with your phone.

As for the Apple watch, yes they can look better than what we see in that pic, but they all have that ugly square body.  To me, it just doesn't have the same elegance and versatility of a round watch.

And that's the big difference.  When Jobs was there, Apple defined the market, and others followed.  Now, they just seem to react to what everyone else is doing.

Not only that, but they redefined markets in which there weren't even players before. They re-defined the music industry, the cell phone industry, and they were a computer company.

Hello everybody. Ive been lurking for years but have never posted before. I never would have dreamed that my first post would be in regards to wearable tech lol.

I'm an Apple fanboy so I'm a little biased, but that image only shows three of 22 models so far. A gallery can be viewed here: http://www.apple.com/watch/gallery/ (http://www.apple.com/watch/gallery/). Personally, I believe that if you watch the event you'll see that the Apple Watch is pretty impressive. However, I must admit, I don't see myself wearing one anytime soon.

Go Vols!

NO TO THE NEW ADIDAS JERSEYS!

Of course they lost their mojo without jobs.  Lord... (-:

They are now just another bloated tech company whose glory days are behind them
