Title: What year was it Vols played Auburn at Neyland and it rained like in Noahs'
Post by: volsboy on October 10, 2014, 12:01:17 EDT
day. I believe it was in late 70's early 80's. I still have water in my ears from that. It looked like Lake Neyland. Players would slide 20 yards on the artificial turf it seemed.

1973

One punt hit at the 25, bounced to the 15 and floated (towards the old section x) to the 5

Most possessions we had in the 3rd quarter were punts on 1st down (1 was 2nd down when the punter fumbled the snap)

How do I know this?
It started a monsoon as we came off the field at halftime

By the time we (the Pride) got back to our seats I had gained 20 pounds from the wool soaking up the rain

All but about a foot down the center of Doug's rug was under water

I was at the one in 1989 and it rained and rained.  Reggie Cobb was awesome, and so was the Auburn long snapper - two snaps over the head of their punter for two safeties.

I think it rained harder at the Florida game in 1992. It absolutely poured buckets of rain. They did not get the covers of the drains so the field flooded until the grounds crew could get them off. The lighting was so bad on the Hill I was too scared to stand up and be the high point. That was one of the hardest rains I have ever been outside in. Water was almost knee-deep on the sidelines.
Of course winning 31-14 helped.

I was a senior at UT in 1973 and was at that game. I was sitting on the first row near the endzone. Water was rolling down the steps and the concrete risers under the seats. Since we were on the lowest row, water accumulated at our feet. It was ankle deep.

And Pirate is right. We got the lead and started punting on first down.

The next day I came down with one of the worst colds I've ever had.

It was a great day.

Droner, we must be the same age because I graduated in 1973. I was at that Auburn game too and remember pouring rain and the 1st down punts. I was mid-way in the stands and got soaked, but no water accumulation where I was. It was all flowing down.

Pirate, this old fart has retired. Be as glad you want. I sleep as late as I want now and I do not have to be anywhere I do not want to be.

Nobody is as old as you are, Pirate.  You are older than Moses.

I always tell people I am not as old as dirt, but I knew dirt when it was still pumice.
