Just looking back at his Vandy days. his biggest wins weren't all that. Maybe we gave him too much admiration for his coaching prowess...here's his big wins:
2013 win over Georgia (8-5) 2013 Bowl win versus Houston (8-5) 2012 Bowl win versus NC State (7-6) 2012 win over Ole Miss (7-6) ONLY wins versus opponents who finished season with a winning record. However, if you can win 9 games at Vandy in back to back seasons - you're a damn good coach. In the three years he was there, Vandy was 6-6, 8-4, 8-4. In the first year after he left, Vandy is 2-5, with the two wins coming in nailbiters against terrible programs. Vandy had never in its history been to back-to-back bowl games. Franklin took them to back-to-back-to-back bowl games. There's more to it than his wins over teams with winning records. Before he arrived (and, apparently, since he's left), Vandy couldn't beat many teams with losing records.
Don't get me wrong; I hope he falls on his face at Penn State. But I don't expect that to happen. Title: Re: I see where PSU fans are starting to turn on Franklin. There is no doubt he profited from the rest of the East being down, and also Clay Mathews was pretty much 80% of his offense, but he is a good coach. But your point may be valid in that he is more of an above average to good coach than one that can take PSU to "then next level". But make no mistake, he is better than most. Bandit, yes, but it was 'Jordan' Mathews at Vandy. Wouldn't have even mentioned that but he is one great player from the Huntsville area we missed on. Another from Huntsville who was second team All-SEC last season, and probably first team this year, is Trey Flowers the great DL from Arkansas. I think I was conflating Clay Travis with Jordan Matthews, since Clay's nose was stuck so deep in Franklin's arse. :naughty: Yeah, that was quite a miss on Matthews...I would bet UT didn't recruit him either. Perhaps the biggest miss of all time from the Huntsville area is Phillip Rivers of Athens. I don't think a single SEC team offered him, or if any did it was Vandy or Kentucky. |
