Title: Seen some discussion about going for the 2............ (and an edit)
Post by: GreggO on November 03, 2014, 12:27:22 EST
I watched the game with my brother and he was hollering, "go for 2!" at the end of regulation. I was saying if it was at home I would agree, but not on a road game. I told him we should live to die another day, not on one play.

There's obviouly differing opinions. What were you thinking and why?

I'll EDIT: There is no right/wrong answer here, just your philosophy and why.

The old sayng "Go for the win at home, go for the tie on the road.", or maybe it's the other way around. Either way I'll take our results.

I agree there is no right/wrong answer. I like the tie and OT in that situation Would have hated to see it all put on one play after the comeback effort that we had. We had all the momentum and the Cocks were rocked at that point. I was surprised, actually, that we didn't get the TD in OT.

I was afraid we would and was glad we didn't.  I don't know about college, but they say in the NFL its 50-50.  I would suspect less successful in college.  Given our issues at OL, we cannot just line up and shove it in, so that limits options.

I understand why some wanted that, but my thought was they hadn't even come close to stopping our offense and theirs had cooled down a bit, so I was good with OT.

fought too hard to place the entire outcome of the game on a play that is difficult to convert....kick the EP and let's continue to battle, I think it worked out pretty good.         :patriot:

I didn't want us to go for 2.

Also, thought I saw some media type tweet that Tennessee (who lost the coin toss in OT) did not get the end of the field they asked for.

My husband was saying go for 2.  I told him I hoped we didn't have to depend on FG, since we hadn't been too productive with those. It was all good, we got extra point and FG won the game.  :dude:

they wanted the South end and they got the South end
The SCe students were on the other end and our fans were mostly on the South end

Disagree with any though of going for two.
The odds were much better going for the tie and OT.
Also, remember that we were playing better short field defense.  Not withstanding that Cooper was wide open on one of the OT plays there is less ground to protect covering receivers in OT (till we backed them up).  Also, we seemed to cover better later in the game.
In the end, great individual effort and play calling really impacted Thompson.  Maggitt with a great individual effort just blew by the OT and sacked him  on the first play.  On the 2nd, great efforts by Barnett (who beat Maggitt to the AB by about a half step forced the QB to react).  The great call piece was the blitz.  Even if Barnett doesn't get him on the ground the blitzers were right there to get him before he would have had any chance to set his feet.  I would argue that we should have sacked him on play 3.  Smothering is the word I would use.

Meanwhile, on offense we were hitting on all cylinders.  The SCe defense had fallen, and couldn't get up.
