Title: SEC would have to approve Chip Kelly hire?
Post by: 73Volgrad on October 30, 2017, 08:27:38 EDT
I did not know the SEC passed a new bylaw that would require an SEC school ask permission from SEC Commissioner to hire an NCAA rulers breaker for actual or potential NCAA charges. On the face of article, anyone like Chip Kelly that has ever been subject to a show cause cannot be hired by SEC school until the Commissioner has approved. That means the UT Chancellor or President would have to go to Sankey and vouch for Chip Kelly if UT wanted to hire him. Ans Sankey could say no with no visible path for appeal. So it looks like Chip Kelly in the SEC may just be a rapid fan's pipe dream. Unless you are Alabama.

Yes. The UT administration would have to go before Greg Sankey and make a case as to why UT should be allowed to hire him.

Did Auburn do this for Pearl?

What I think this really means is that Bama and Saban have to approve it.

I think it's a relatively new league rule, and wasn't in effect then.

No.  Pearl's show cause period had expired when Auburn hired him.

Kelly's still has another 6 months or so to go.

Kelly's SC was imposed in 2013, and was only 18 months long.  As far as the NCAA is concerned, he's now in the clear.  But this new SEC rule means that any coach who has had NCAA issues at any time in the past will have be approved by the commissioner.  So as far as the SEC is concerned, all NCAA actions against a coach have no expiration date and last a lifetime.  Pretty severe policy, if you ask me.

That's what I thought too.

There are not many out there that are lilly white clean. Hard to compete against Saban and not cheat. The SEC is looking worse and worse appealing for any coach to put up with the prospect of competing against Saban, and doing it honestly.
