Title: I still don't get where did all the great talent Jones was supposed to have
Post by: volsboy on September 25, 2018, 01:11:51 EDT
recruited go. Was all those players recruiting ratings a fraud? He has only been gone less than  season. Where did it go? Why can't it get coached up? So you are telling me Jones left us in worse shape than Dooley did? How did that happen?

The talent of fans team is never as good as the fan thinks it is.

Go look up how many players that should be juniors or seniors for us that left the program...transferred or Butch ran off. There are 3 five stars by most services that are starting right now at Baylor...Cal and Colorado State. Then add the fact that there have been some busts and some poorly developed.

Right now Pruitt is trying to cram a big square peg into a small round hole trying to run a pro set power offense with players recruited for Butch's finesse spread offense...Carr coached at Michigan for years running a pro set offense then Michigan decided to hire Rich Rod and he was trying to run his spread offense with Carr's pro set players. Rich Rod recruited pretty good for 3 years to his spread offense but Michigan decided to fire him and hire Brady Hoke who guess what...ran a pro set offense having to use 3 years of Rich Rod's spread offense recruits....Brady Hoke recruited darn good for 3 years to fit his pro set offense and then Michigan decided to fire Hoke...Then Harbaugh decided to come home who runs a pro set offense and even though he's a good football coach he benefited greatly by coming in and winning games with Brady Hoke's pro set players. See a trend here? Got to have the players to fit your system.

Paper talent.  They were blown up by Austin Price just because they were UT verbals.

Star ratings are completely useless.

Expound on that thought, please.

I think TnPhil is right that a lot has been run oft and some not developed well ("who is Kongbo"  Alex: "that's correct, your board").    And yes, some of the players were for a spread offense, particularly JG, but it's not like JG is that great a runner anyway, or compared to Dobbs he isn't.

But skill players are skill players.  Our RBs and WRs seem fine.  Is there such a thing as a "spread OL"?  If so, put him in!   Better than the almost nonexistent ones we have now.

My point is I get what you are saying about the spread vs. pro set.  Just wondering what position that really matters for, other than QB or maybe FB?

There is such a thing as undersized OL that are going to be quicker and more nimble. They were supposed to make Butch's infallible offense work. As he found out, that doesn't cut it in the SEC, and now Jeremy Pruitt is paying for it.

^There you go^. To look at what a power football OL looks like look no further than UGA....BAMA...Wisconsin...OSU....Stanford...Michigan etc...

Also...we have some good backs but we don't have the power back needed such as Hurd was and Bama produces by the truckloads. It's why as Pruitt said after the FL game...we nee back that go forward after contact...not backwards.

Isn't London a bit of a power back?

Also OL is important I am sure, and might be sized differently in a spread, but OL issues I think extend beyond that unfortunately.

What might be just as or more important is that these kids have years in a spread system and now have to adapt.   I think with time we will get it.
