Title: Auburn is in the process of making our last coaching search look GOOD
Post by: PirateVOL on December 22, 2020, 05:00:51 EST
What a cluster  :bird:

Oregon coach, gets a large raise,
Sark turns them down,
Nappier turns them down
Clark turns them down
They may end up spending $21M to end up with their DC coordinator, who nobody wants ,,, :wow:

FWIW Nappier would be my choice if the powers that be made a change

Most probably saying you just fired a coach that beat Saban 40% of the time, just won 6 games in a 10 game SEC season and you want me to be your coach.....Well  :bird:

Not good when a coach at UAB turns you down. And he's a heck of a coach.

This is why I tend to be more cautious on pulling the trigger on coaches.  This and I still think we ran Fulmer off prematurely.

Both of those are IMO reasons we have had trouble attracting new coaches.

And for the record, this is in no way a defense of Pruitt.

Also, it appears they want the new coach to keep some of the existing staff, including the bag man and Cadillac

This is the correct choice. Presumably he has an eye on a future opening.  Could be LSU,  could be Texas, could be us.

I'm wondering is he is waiting on an opening at Bama?  He has close ties there.  Could Saban shock the world and retire this year?

No.  A couple years ago Saban injured his hip and had surgery in the offseason, which typically for him was in a dead period where no practice was allowed (early June), and he was asked if he was coming back, and he said "i'm going to be at Alabama a long time to come".  This was 2018 I think, or maybe 2017.  He may have changed his mind, but I doubt it.

LSU would not be as long a move, but Texas may be more likely.  Just WAGs though.

It is looking more and more like their only option is to hire Kevin Steele.

Why do schools keep falling for the "he's a good coach" crap with these coaches? Why not open up the bank and pay Meyer, Stoops, etc..

They are not available most likely.

What makes you think he isn't worth it? He has recruited with the best of them. I would love to see him at UT and going against Saban again.

Why the eff do you think Napier is the man? How many coaches have come from these small schools and then shown they were in over their heads in the SEC. He will be the next in line. Btw, why did we hire Jones?

Why the fizzle don't you look at his history, including being the OC at Clemson under Dabo as well as at AZ State?!?
Not to mention 2 stints working for Saben
He has also been a recruiting Coordinator (at Clemson)

Also, for the shallow among us, he has been SUCCESSFUL at his LA school (unlike drools)

Also, those that follow the game note he is on the short list of up and comers in the college coaching fraternity

As an extra bit, he hasn't and isn't looking for Rommel for guidance

Bottom line:  He has been on the staff at successful MAJOR programs in multiple Power 5 conferences, worked for several VERY successful head coaches, several of whom are noted offensive gurus and has been SUCCESSFUL in building his current programme

Now your lazy ass doesn't have to do any research

Can you blame any coach for turning down Auburn? People harp on this fanbase's unrealistic expectations, but it's nothing compared to the expectations from fans AND administration at Auburn. Most SEC teams would take Gus Malzahn and what he brings to the table and be perfectly content. At Auburn, he was constantly on the hot seat.

I'm going to LMAO if they end up with Steele, after blowing $21M to can Gus!  BTW, 50% of that s due in less than a month!
Gus is going be living large, and laughing every time he checks his bank balance

Nope!  But was he any better than Richt at uga?  I don't think so, but then again Richt had a longer run.  The only thing Malzahn has over Richt is that Malzahn actually made the BCT championship that one time and almost won it.  Other than that, I think Richt actually had a better win percentage.  Richt did have almost two decades though in fairness.

Oh hellz to the no.

Our AD has lost so much over the past 20-ish years. I'll be DAMNED if I'm going to let some Johnny Come Latelys steal our "fizzleed Up Coaching Search" heavyweight championship belt. This is the last straw.

The good news? We're likely to get another chance to reclaim our title very soon. So Auburn, hold our beer. Fire up the flight trackers. Send up a bat signal for Clay Travis and Jon Reed. Get me Mike Leach on line 1, Lane Kiffin on line 2, and Mike Gundy on line 3 (let's get that man another raise!). Maybe the third time will be the charm with Gruden. LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

It's what happens when you have little brother syndrome to Bama....Even though Gus beat Saban 40% of the time which I'd take right now in a heartbeat. Auburn fans saying one of their biggest boosters (not the Yellow Wood guy) is paying the 50% due in 30 days out of his pocket. Per those Auburn fans he signed off on the extension and big contract and buyout Gus was given 2 years ago....So he's forking out the 50%.

They thought they were getting Mario Cristobal from Oregon....Nike money said no you're not. Cristobal just got a big raise and extension from Oregon. Auburn now looks like they've been turned down by B. C. D and E on their list. On a Auburn board this morning there was a thread....Congrats Tennessee you are now off the top of the official worst hiring cluster frick list in college football.

All of these coaches are "up and comers". Wasn't Pruitt one when we signed him? He was a coordinator for two successful programs. How has he turned out.

Pruitt had never been a HC....just rode the coat tails of Richt at UGA.....Jimbo at FSU and Saban at Bama.

Pruitt should have gone Butch Jones route of coaching at smaller schools then moving up. At least Butch had been pretty successful at 2 programs before coming to UT....Pruitt wasn't the coach for a major rebuilding job at UT.....But if you believe what has been said he was way down the list. And IMO the next coach here will be way down the list too.....We are one screwed up program with screwed up people in charge.

Watch the difference in a few years when Barnes retires....Coaches will be calling us.

So he beat Bama 40% of the time. But he lost to many teams he was supposed to beat. If you beat the teams you are supposed to beat regularly and beat the teams you are not supposed to beat every now and then, Your job is pretty solid. His biggest curse was coaching in the SECw.

UT, aTm and UF fired their coaches the same time. UF played in the SECcg, aTm just missed the CFP and we sucked this year. I know they were in better shape than we were, but look who they hired and look who we hired. Should we really be surprised at the difference in performance?

none of that  will matter if they get a successful coach. all will be forgotten.
