Title: Toppmeyer on Finebaum again today
Post by: BanditVol on September 29, 2021, 11:23:29 EDT
Just now, literally like ten minutes ago.  Mentioned the Vol cancellation of Army again, but was almost sedate. Said it very tentatively and acknowledged that it was due to the triple option and cut blocking.

Methinks he heard quite a bit from Vol fans on his #badword#ry yesterday.  One of which was me on twitter.   :naughty:

Droner:  Feel free to preemptively lock this thread.  I will not be offended at all.

My opinion won't solve anything... but I don't begrudge a first-year coach making a move that erases a previous staff's tendency toward mismanagement.

Per the AD the discussion with Army were initiated over 2 years ago and the deals were signed this spring

Then I don't begrudge Fulmer for taking that action. I don't see what the fuss is. If the team was functioning properly, a team running the triple option would still be an ill-placed opponent before a game with Florida.

One of the few good things about this discussion is that it has brought back some fond memories.  When I was in HS, we ran the wishbone my Frosh and Soph years.  Man did we run the 'bone well.

One of my all time fav memories of those times is watching 2 particular films at the start of summer football camp.  And by films I mean real movie film shown on a projector.  Of course we watched team film on opponents the same way during the season.  But these two films were really special.  One was a Wishbone training film made by Darrel Royal and the other was a film on how to defend against the bone by none other than Joe Paterno.  Those were two great films for sure and certainly one of the highlights of camp.  Joe was such a dork it made it hilarious to watch....but very informative fer sure.

Eventually we switched to the I formation and never looked back.  But damn, my sophomore year we had two great tailbacks and a bruising FB.  When those sweeps hit the corner and made the turn they were beautiful sights to behold.

My football time was spent in the "student body left" and student body right" timeframe
As an underweight corner or OLB that was most definitely NOT fun

Oh my my..... the DE and the Corner play was just absolutely essential in stopping the bone.  If either of those links in the chain broke, the whole defense broke, it seemed.  You really have to have 2 badass corners to be effective against it.
