When I moved to bammer in the 90s, pretty much Mississippi was 50th in everything and bammer was 49th. As far as I am concerned though, I live in Huntsville, recently picked as the best place to live in the country. https://realestate.usnews.com/places/rankings/best-places-to-live Take it with a grain of salt, but Huntsville is booming. It's now the largest city in the state (2nd largest metro area) and is starting to look like Nashville and Charlotte. Road work and construction everywhere. A buddy of mine who retired recently gave me a lift to a medical appointment downtown at Huntsville Hospital. He worked there for 30 years or so and said he didn't even recognize it anymore. I have always been a bit ambigous about living in Huntsville, it's not bad but not that great either, but here lately its a great place to be. I would have left long ago if I didn't have family in Knoxville, Atlanta and Memphis and Huntsville is about equi-distant from them all, but there is a lot going on here right now. The local police and city govt of Athens TN was corrupt in the 30s and 40s. Returning GIs from WWII got rubbed the wrong way and raided the armory and overthrew the local govt. It's the only violent overthrow of a govt in the US by citizens, IIRC. I think the corruption was linked to the old 'boss' system that permeated a lot of US cities back then. I think Boss Crump was involved in this. My great grandfather FLetcher Morgan was an atty and a state congressman and he took on some of this machine during his time. His farmhouse near Dayton was machine gunned in response! Luckily no one was hurt. |
