Title: So what?s the deal with our offense?
Post by: VinnieVOL on October 06, 2024, 04:53:30 EDT
Last week it was ?oh man, brilliant coaching job by Heupel??.  Like, there was this idea we were such masters of our craft that we could win any way you want?. We could throttle it back OR go fast.  But the horror of last night is that I?m worried we don?t have another gear.

Is it the OL?  Is it Nico?  Has Heupel been ?figured out??

It seems Pittman saw how the 3-3-5 defense that NC State slowed us down somewhat and used elements to frustrate us.  They had 3 down lineman then pressure coming from someone extra, and we had trouble figuring out the extra.  Nico got beat up..  and I still can?t believe the last play happened.

Defensive coordinators are getting more tape on Nico and how to defend he and our offense. Heupel needs to adapt, modify, expand, and create because we are going to see more 3-deep, man underneath/tight coverage with a spy from here on out.

Yep, the word seems to be out on us.  Especially on the road.  Get a pre snap penalty on 1st or 2nd down and we might as well go ahead and punt.   :frown:

We are not running g the fast pace any more
Probably o. The order of 20% or less last night

Not sure the light has come on for Nico yet. He was holding on to the ball too long last night, repeatedly.

I think part of it is playcalling. Some of our plays are all way downfield and take time to develop. We need more quick outs, slants and halfback passes.

In fact, those seemed to be working last night for the most part. I noticed this last year against UF live with Milton. Five patterns of 20+ yards puts a burden on the OL.

Multiple things can simultaneously be true.

1) Nico is gifted.
2) Nico is not good with presnap reads.
3) Nico doesn't go through progressions fast enough.
4) RBs and TEs are hit or miss in pass protection.
5) Heard is really struggling.

6) Heupel is managing around all of the above, but lacks options.
7) Heupel botched clock management massively.

You posted while I was typing. Any view that aligns with mine must be correct.

Nico needs to start scrambling earlier or throw it out of bounds. The standing like a statue and staring down field is not getting it done.

This!  ⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️

I think not taking the TO after the Thornton catch was huge. That play stopped the clock at 0:35 and Tennessee didn?t snap the ball for the next play until 0:21, even though the chains had to be moved and the Arkansas bench received a sideline warning.

I believe that CJH/Hazzle?s hands are somewhat tied in play calling and tempo.

The game has been slowed down by the refs a lot.....We are getting called on our wide out screens a lot more the past 2 seasons. We have very little imagination in our run or passing game. I said in year one that Heupel ran a gimmick offense that relies on surprise and when it's figured out we were going to be in trouble. We aren't loaded with high 4 and 5 star talent to lineup and play big boy football against the elite.

Two things....When Golesh left our offense imagination left. Butch was shizzle without DeBord. And I saw it posted on TOS....It appears Hooker was to Heupel what Dobbs was to Butch.

100%.  if you are not calling the TO at 35 seconds left, better get the snap off much faster!  Horrible decision.

Alright, who wants to take one for the team and detail questionable moves from the last three minutes?

Agree. Just as we have a get-back coach we also need a TO advisor to help manage the clock better.

My question is: When they saw that defense Arkansas was playing, could they not adjust?

It was a 3-6-2 or a 3-8. I'm not an expert on this stuff but surely it was obvious to the coaches on offense.  :dunno:

Right,  was it stubbornness and refusal to adjust or the inability to do so?  Idk which is more worrisome.

Want to feel worse? The WR in the left corner and Sampson in the right flat were both options.

You run off tackle and not up the centers ass 45 times....You hit you RBs in the flat.....You hit the TEs underneath. Offensive football 101.

When Golesh left he took our offensive system with him.

Yes!  Where was the short passing game?  When they are pressuring you, throw it quick to the outside or even a slant over the middle. Just don't stand there play after play waiting for a 20 yard route to open up.   :banghead:

Wondering if the running up the Centers ass was related to bad tackle play though.  Hope that wasn't it, but....

I thought there were some adjustments at the half, just not enough.  The run game did much better in the second half, at any rate.  Lack of passing production, IMO a lot of it was play calling.  We did not have enough quick routes given the pressure Arkansas was able to get on Nico.

Sampson needs to be more and more involved in our passing game. Either with screens or passes in the flat. He is the biggest advantage we have, especially against a LB or SS.

That's more the reason to hit it outside with the passing game and running plays. Football 101 Chapter 2.

So more C gap and less A, but no B whatsoever?
