Title: Bullet points on spring football so far
Post by: Volznut on April 10, 2014, 01:19:12 EDT
* Eman Moseley has been impressive at CB and has been running with the 1's. Coleman has moved to Nickel
* Hurd has lived up to the billing so far
* OL has been ok, but tackles are a concern. Blair has not locked down the LT position yet
* QB's... looks like Worley and Ferguson have separated themselves a little bit
* WR corps looks really good and will be a vastly improved group. Pearson and Malone running with the 1s
* Freshman TEs Helm/Wolf are running 1-2 and look very good
* DL, especially DT is a concern. There will be help coming in the summer. 10 4 star defensive players join.
* Vereen has looked good. When Maggitt moves in to play DE it presents a very tough situation for the opposing OL
* Punting and kicking needs work
* So far Devrin Young has been returning kicks.
* Hubbs has said the secondary looks better than last year and should be helped by the newcomers in the summer

Bottom line, I think the offense will be much better, the defense needs work, especially interior line.

Update on punting:

Darr’s Transformation: Last summer during practice Matt Darr was the most inconsistent punter on the roster. He struggled fielding the snap, he struggled with his release time, and his punts were mostly shanks. Flat out, he did not look like a college level punter, let alone a guy you could rely on in the SEC. That being said, whatever he did in the offseason and whatever Butch Jones and his position coaches have changed about his form is working in spades. Matt Darr is punting faster and more consistently than he ever has. Tonight he was consistently hitting 55-yard punts in the air with solid hang time and he was getting them off quickly. If Darr continues to improve at this rate, he could compete for some punter awards this season.

The bullet about the incoming DL 4 *'s is very encouraging.  It will probably take some time though.  At least early in the season I expect opponents to be able to run on us.  But maybe I will be pleasantly surprised...

Yes, he has been more consistent, I am hoping he pulls a Palardy this season. Bullock appears to be our #1 placekicker right now, with Medley coming in this summer.
