Title: And here we go...
Post by: Black Diamond Vol on April 15, 2014, 11:59:17 EDT
The ESPN talk shows are all reporting that Marshall is our target, and we're already in talks with him (or his people).  So let's see how this goes. :dunno:

I'd take that and run with it, if true, but in the end I don't think he will be the guy.

I'm betting that we end up with either Mick Cronin or Richard (the son) Pitino.

If we can't get Gruden, I want Phil Jackson.  We can easily better the $10MM pocket change the Knicks are paying him.  Plus, I am pretty sure he can bring MJ and Kobe as assistants.

I'll take Pat Riley. Take that UK.

So much unrealized potential at UT. Everything is in place. Need a good hire, but I don't know who that realistically gives UT a shot to hire. Marshall would be a huge get. How much would that take?

Marshall makes $1.75m. How much can UT put together for him? Would we dare pay $2.5m?

I know there have been comments indicating that Marshall might not be a good fit for Knoxville, some even saying "do we even want him?"

But right now I would be ecstatic if we got him.  I would also be shocked if Hart ponies up enough $$$ to lure Marshall away, because to me that's the only reason I can see Marshall coming is if we throw a huge salary at him.  Judging from history, that doesn't seem likely.

But yeah, if we get him?  Seems like a home run at this point.

Marshall has a rep of not being an easy guy to get along with and not an easy guy for assistants to work for.  Apparently has quite and ego.

After being passed over twice by UT already I'm just not sure how happy he would be to go through the process again, unless it was made known to him that he was the top choice and his number could be met.

As I've said before, I've heard from many that he has an outsized ego, even for a coach (although I've never personally seen evidence of it).  But like you, I'd be thrilled to have him.  Without a doubt, he's the hottest name on the market right now, and landing him would pretty much dispel the notion that this is a third-rate job.

One thing that gives me hope is that Hart is a former basketball player.  So I have a feeling that he'll have a more personal interest in making a good hire than our previous ADs.  Landing a coach of Marshall's stature would be the masterstroke of Hart's tenure thus far.

Archie Miller is my prediction. Makes less than a million. Excellent basketball pedigree. Neither Marshall, nor Cronin played college ball  just throwing Cronin out there. Hell Danny Manning could be a good hire.

Didn't Miller sign a new contract during the NCAAs that included a huge buyout?  Thought I heard the TV guys mention that during the tourney.

If so, that might make him a less attractive candidate.

Hart made a point of saying today that proven experience is a prerequisite and that an up-and-comer won't be considered unless Tennessee simply cannot attract anyone else. A bold statement which leads me to think that a.) he probably already has a good idea who he is going to pursue and what their answer is going to be, and b.) it probably won't be a guy like Archie Miller.

Miller may prove to be an outstanding coach. We may pass on him now and then look back in a few years and kick ourselves for missing out on a true star. But I don't think his stock has risen high enough yet to take that gamble. He missed the postseason entirely last year. This year he finished fifth in the Atlantic 10 in the regular season and scooted into the tourney as a bubble team before making the big run. The run aside, there isn't much of a body of work there to go on. Not just yet.

Miller did sign a contract extension but I can't find anything that spells out the terms.

Serious question CW... you got a hunch? :powert:

My bet is that it is someone who is on no one's radar. Maybe a Michael White or Donnie Tyndall. The only thing with those two is their biggest success has been the NIT, and Hart made it clear earlier this season that he doesn't consider the NIT to be a measure of postseason success.

Phil Jackson, obviously. 20 million/year.

Is Rick Byrd considered?

I wouldn't roll the dice. Get a top five guy (Marshall, Smart, Stevens, etc.), or snag Byrd. The next coach should be more proven than Martin.

Is Rick Byrd considered?

Probably not.  Hasn't been a serious candidate in the past.

Being 60 won't help his cause.

I'm pretty sure that eventually, we will hire a men's basketball coach.

In the meantime....   :naughty:
