Title: I would like to retract everything I've said about Jancek being the weak link
Post by: Creek Walker on September 01, 2014, 07:28:34 EDT
Of this coaching staff. Clearly UtahSt isn't an SEC-caliber offense and maybe we get smoked just like last year in conference play...but, wow, what a daylight-and-dark difference at first glance. The one thing that stood out to me: I don't think there was a single missed tackle. I can't remember the last time that could be said about a UT defense. Guys were wrapping up and making plays. Countless open field tackles tonight wouldn't have been made the last couple of seasons.

There were a few missed tackles (2 involving AJ) but even those they slowed down the ball carrier until the calvary arrived.  And that was a key difference last night - pursuit.  We were swarming to the ball.  Last year if there was a missed tackle often there was nobody close to help.  Last night we mostly had 2 or more ready to help.  A key example was the long run of the night.  McNeil had the short angle and Randolph the longer angle.  They were both good angles, whereas last year we often took poor angles and didn't or couldn't get there but last night we took good angles and we got there.

There were.  I watch the game with my bro in law and there was one specific play in the second half where a tackle was missed that would have been a loss behind the line that turned into a one yard gain. But the other four guys swarming to the ball kept it from being a longer gain.  My bro in law complained and I turned to him and said "the last couple years they all would have whiffed and it would have gone for a TD".

The sad thing is that may not even be an exageration...we were pretty bad last year and historically bad in 2012.
