Title: Game Report (Offense)
Post by: PirateVOL on September 28, 2014, 01:03:01 EDT
OL:  Good and bad.  For the first time this year we were getting a push.  For example, on the play Hurd almost broke through on a run to the left the push was 2-3 yards downfield.  On running plays we were better, on passing plays not so much, especially in the 2nd half.  Roberton was abused often.  Still had some comm issues with the TE though Thomas improved a lot from his first start at OU.  We still do not pick up the twists very well, led to a sack in the first half (the other sack was on Worley as the corner TELEGRAPHED his blitz for 2-3 seconds before the snap). C-

RB:  Hurd is a stud, period dot.  He ran "lower" today, led to additional yards, the TD a case in point.  We used him in the pass game more today.  He starts the UF game IMO.  Lane essentially became a lead blocker in this game. B

WR/TE:  Malone got open all day, needs to help his QB out more IMO.  Wolf showed how much we missed him against OU, future star.  Pig blocked well, ran a nice route on the TD.  Nice to see Croom come back and get a TD.  Helm still a work in progress.  B, if only because they left some catches on the field.

QB:  Worleybird can/will lead us to victory.  He started slow, missed some wide open receivers early (Pig and Lane) though the seem route to Wolf was a thing of beauty.  He was late on 3-4 throws in the middle of the game but was solid with the game on the line, seemed to throw much better with the bad elbow.  Peterman to some extent was a victim of poor line play and some interesting play calling.  He did seem to regress after the fumbled exchange with Lane (I think he was trying to pull it back).

Coaching:  Really had a good game plan going into the game, threw a lot of new stuff.  In the 3rd quarter seemed to go into a shell (though not nearly as weird and bad as Bobo) especially with Peterman in the game.  Thought we beeded to run a few quick slats or some more dig routes to help the QB out.  For the first time since Butch got here we ran the wildcat, the 'Wild Hurd', and it was effective.

Caoching...I noticed, as probably the entire world did, that Mason Hudson cannot throw downfield very well (thank God).  So around the start of the second uga went to screens and backfield dumps and it worked.  (ahem)...though they still got a couple to work, for the most part we contained that much better in the second half.

Can you say SECOND HALF ADJUSTMENTS?  Because Dooley would not know such if it hit him in the head...which it did, repeatedly.   :naughty:

So nice to finally feel good about the direction this team is going.
