So we might as well state the obvious: The likelihood of that happening is about the same as Tennessee winding up in the CFB playoffs this year. But that would make a lot of grown men squeal like school girls.

I've always thought the same thing.  But I thought it would be because he wouldn't do it, not that UT wouldn't love to have him.  But there it is, in black and white.  Make no mistake, Debord's seat just got really hot, fair or not.  I mean, if Peyton Freakin' Manning comes to Butch and says he wants a job, you can't tell him no. 

Honestly, even if Peyton took a job here, I'm not sure how long he'd stay.  The man is a billionaire.  The 24/7 recruiting grind would probably get real old real quick.  Not to mention that he can buy and sell people like Butch Jones.  How would that boss/subordinate dynamic work?

And however unlikely it might be, if there's one superstar player who is actually determined enough to go into coaching, Peyton Manning would be that one player.

It would be a shame to let all that knowledge and experience go to waste in a broadcasters booth.

I don't see it happening, personally. I think Peyton will go into broadcasting after football.

That would certainly make the most sense.  But indulge me while I don my tinfoil hat:

Peyton Manning is one of the most intelligent, media-savvy athletes in the world.  The last time he made anything resembling a misstep with the media, he was talking about "liqoured up idiot kickers".  That was, what, 15 years ago?  He also knows the UT fanbase as well as anyone.  Point being, Peyton knew full well that he would be setting Big Orange Country into an uproar when he said what he said on national radio.  I don't think he would have said it if A. he wasn't legitimately interested in the job, and B. didn't believe there was a pretty good chance of it happening.  

I'll take it a step further.  Maybe this sheds some more light on the DeBord hire.  Maybe Butch has already discussed this with Peyton, and just wanted a "stopgap" hire, because he knew who was coming to replace him in another year or two.

And to go full black helicopter mode, our read-option offesne just got a commitment from the top pro-style QB in the class of 2017.  A QB who just happens to be from Indianapolis.  Maybe he was made privvy to some inside info.  

I'm just thinking out loud.  I know it all sounds crazy, and it probably is.  But you have to admit, there ARE some dots to connect here. :secret:

I like the way you think, but just one quibble: If Peyton is so media savvy and what he said was carefully scripted, why did he say "QB coach" instead of "Offensive coordinator"?  :biggrin:

step into the QB coach role for a year the step up to OCwould be like Peyton, to prep then move into a new role

Maybe he wouldn't be the OC.  They're probably grooming Z for playcalling duties, and Peyton would just take the other half of Debord's responsibilities. 

I'm not going to lie — having Peyton on this staff would make me absolutely giddy. I think it could be structured in a way to where he doesn't have to spend the countless hours on the recruiting trail. Just having him on staff would be recruitment in and of itself for at least the next 10-15 years. Besides, he would probably be too busy picking apart film and designing new plays to do much recruiting.  :biggrin:

He said he would "consider it", which is a far cry from saying he would do it.

Having said that, if there is one person who would ignore the fact that he already has plenty of money and a soft job in TV waiting for him, it would be Peyton.

Put it this way...no one expected him to come back for his senior year at UT either. 

Heck, it would like he was doing it for a hobby.   :biggrin: 

One thing is certain...he loves the game, completely.  Never wants to come out, even up 5 TDs. 

Although I still think it's nowhere near even odds, there is IMO a decent chance that Peyton...and only Petyon...woudl do something like that.

If nothing else, the odds over Gruden coming here are infinitely better.   :naughty:
