Title: Vols vs. Northwestern in the Outback Bowl?
Post by: Creek Walker on November 24, 2015, 06:07:13 EST
I would've rather played Michigan, but I'll take this matchup in a heartbeat.

If NW loses then we might get the loser of the little game Saturday in Columbus

The Outback is clearly our best possible destination, but as an opponent, NW doesn't excite me at all.  If we can't play Michigan, I would want Nebraska or Penn St.  We owe them both big-time.

or Penn St.

Franklin?  Yes, we owe that d-bag big time.

Would hate to lose to him again though.

Ordinarily, Northwestern wouldn't excite me, either. But beating a program ranked in the top 15 in the nation could be a nice springboard for National Signing Day and the 2016 season.

Beating the top ranked SEC teams wouldn't have hurt either. Or Oklahoma. Remember, that Iowa beat down didn't translate to this season either. Crazy how Iowa and UT's seasons have differed. I wouldn't have guessed they would have the success they have had.

more of your shallow thinking

You notice how the one trick pony, once again, got his only thought process into a thread that it really wasn't a match for.
If I paid you a dollar for each original thought he had, you would be a poor, poor man.

How are things in your new job?

You hosting the pregame parts is parts party next year? :naughty:

It obviously doesn't matter. They are in the playoff discussion. They beat the Huskers and win BIG CCg, they will be in. Northwestern and Wisky are top 25 as of last Sat.

Remember, that Iowa beat down didn't translate to this season either.

Based on what? That Iowa has had a great season this year? That doesn't have jack shizzle to do with how Tennessee's season has played out. The dominating win over Iowa showed that Tennessee was ready to play with middle-tier Power 5 programs instead of just the bottom-shelf programs like Vandy and UK. And that proved true this season, with Tennessee defeating Georgia, taking a top 10 Florida team to the wire on the road, taking a top 10 Oklahoma team to double overtime, and leading the likely national champion late in the fourth quarter on the road.

I was as irritated by those early losses as anyone, and I shared my displeasure of Jones' coaching decisions in those losses. But those losses were over two months ago and this team has responded as well as it could and has taken care of its business. This team is on the verge of closing out an 8-4 season, which is exactly where most reasonable prognosticators said they would finish after the win over Iowa last season.

To say that the Iowa win didn't translate into this season is foolishness.

So after the bowl game last year you honestly expected Iowa to be better than the Vols this season? I didn't.

Assuming they ARE better; not just facing weaker opposition. You think that they could have done better against our schedule?

Read slowly - they have NOT played the level of competition we have!  When you grow up come back to the discussion!  Until you overcome your HATRED of Jones and the Tennessee football team trying to rationally speak with you is aboit as fruitful as talking to a bamer!

Yeah, but I grew up managing airmen and today I manage a group of "misfit toys" (when I'm not in the UK working drinking ale) so I'm used to it ... :naughty:

Best job in the world. I go into work at 9:00am, and I usually leave to come home by 11:30.......am. Real life.

We're all for a pregame! Also, I get free tickets, so that's another added bonus. We'll certainly be in touch

Read slowly....that schedule of theirs you say is weak has them in the 4th playoff position. Our tough schedule has us not ranked. Not saying it is right, just what it is. A tough schedule doesn't help you unless you win the games. I don't think they beat both Nebraska and win their CCg however. How long can we blame a tough schedule for our records. We've always had tough schedules. Next year is a more manageable schedule. We will see how that plays out.

So do you think we are a lot better this year than last? I certainly do.  I'd love to hear your logic of why we are not though.

I said "logic" while talking to volsboy ...... :dielaughing:

We are 1 win better if that's a lot to you.

About to be 2 better.

And here is the thing.  The "no such thing as a moral victory" and "all that matters is if you win crowd" is correct, on a game by game and season basis.

But where style points matter is in the potential for future success.  You yourself have very strongly stated that we could, or should, be either 10-2 or 12-0.  No doubt that's true.  We EASILY could be 11-0 and staring 12-0 and a playoff run in the face.

Here's the deal.  No one in their right mind would say that about last year.  We were blown out by Ole Miss, OU, and bammer.  Those games were not even close.  The most anyone could claim about last year was that .... MAYBE .... we could have been 9-3.

8-4 would have been a more logical thing to claim.  If we had beaten UGa and UF, both of which were close games, we could have been 8-4.  Mizzou won the East and although we only lost by 8 we scored late to make it closer.  I'd say maybe that was a legitimate loss, and we shouldn't just claim the Vols could have won all the close ones (which is why I have two records above for this season).

The bottom line is that by anyone's opinion, even all the opposing fans I have discussed this with, we are much, much better this year, and not just because of the record.

Next year I expect great things for the Vols.   :dude:

Actually, at the moment we are two better than last year
We were 5-6 at this point last year
We win to maintain our two game advantage
