Title: Game Thread: Ohio
Post by: murfvol on September 17, 2016, 04:53:55 EDT
To save time in this game thread, you may leave the number that corresponds with your thoughts in lieu of typing stuff should you desire.

1) Why didn't we retain Sam Pittman?
2) Jalen Hurd runs hard.
3) Dobbs is nifty on keepers.

4) I hate this circle drill (Pirate only).
5) Shy Tuttle is a player.
6) Why isn't Jack Jones in?

7) That catch by Malone won the game.
8) The back nine was tough (Droner only).

In my defense I like the portions of the circle drill last week
My gripe isn't the circle drill but that it has been the same drill for ten (10) freaking years!

Pirate liking any portion of a circle drill is such an anomaly it doesn't get a number. Also, BDV is welcome to use #4 if necessary.

Nah.  The Pride has taken a step forward since Sousa was canned.  They aren't back to where they used to be, but they're getting there.  But they DO need to update the Circle Drill.

I am on record as being pro most any circle drill, not that an update would be bad. I shall now take cover.

Were the verbiage different, #9 would absolutely merit inclusion.  Additionally, the sentiment has not been accompanied by corresponding action much of the year, and by all units.

It should be noted however, no one on the OL made any such recorded claim.

Good!

TK Jr in on a lot of plays early
We are covering well early

Burnett has lined off sides several plays, finally was caught

I like the aggression. Dialing back penalties would be good, but I'll take those over complacency.

Then for the "update" on Sutton, the sideline reporter informs us that he's on the sideline being examined.  That's some JP-quality detective work right there. :frown:

Two points:
We telegraphed the play, again
Thomas was blown up by their DE, if he is even semi effective Hurd could have cut inside of the block and 33 simply outruns the play

I was fixing to note Williams' drops too. One has directly cost us a TD, and another has given our opponent the ball near the red zone (penalty not his fault) .

I have to disagree with all the "JP" comparisons, because this broadcast is essentially a JP/Raycom/TBS concern.  All they did is change the name to "SEC Network".  As for the game, it is Bucking UnFelievable the Ohio is getting far more pressure on the QB than w are.  How depressing is that?

My thoughts...we started well, and even with the score, I wasn't concerned util late 2nd quarter.  Because....

1. They didn't really stop us until the fifth drive.  We gave up one really stupid int (thanks Williams!) and Dobbs made a very poor decision leading to a long sack leading to a missed 55 yard FG.  Other than that we moved the ball well I thought.

2. On defense, in spite of continuing a drive with TWO penalties, and spotting them the ball at the 10 with the aforemented int, we held them to 9 points.  Take away dumb mistakes and they only have 3.  So generally, other than a couple misses and the penalties, I am happy with the D.

BUT....from about the middle of the 2nd...

1. All of a sudden Dobbs can't hit anything.  He missed a wide open Malone (although Malone may have slipped?) for a long 3rd down conversion that we needed, and overthrew Malone later on a sure 6 points.   Not good!

2. Defense is riddled with injuries, and not trivial ones!  We are now playing McDowell and Jumper at LB, and I am unsure we even HAVE a backup left.  ANd of course Sutton is out (but at least it's not a knee!).

I still think we win, but we need to get a quick stop on the first series of the half.  Again, D playing pretty well in spite of injuries. Dobbs needs to remove head from posterior and figure out how to hit wide open WRs, or it will be a long day.

"I still think we win". That part of your quote says it all. We are playing Ohio. Not an SEC foe. I still think the hype is hurting this team worse than anything. They are pressing too hard to live up to it. I don't have the answer. Sorry if I get to cynical.

We have been flipping Burnett to the right side a lot this year
Remember, that is where he got the safety against candy last year

Until Hall gets back we can't fix the remaining weak leak on the OL

This team has talent. I still feel the light bulb will come on and this offense will click. Hopefully next week against UF.

So where is Hurd this drive?

He hasn't been his usual beastly self today, and sure, the o-line ain't helping him out.

Nice block by Wolf at the goal line, and great run by Dobbs.

I was just going to ask the same thing. He should be getting a bunch of touches. But, what do I know?

Buchanan has played a lot today. He seems to do a good job getting his head around.

Mosely never saw the ball.

What is wrong with these guys? Both units, offense and defense, have underachieved so far. But it's not the coaching.

Hopefully they are just looking ahead to UF. But that excuse is getting worn out. Maybe we are just not as good as we thought we were going to be. I am guilty.

Not even close. Apps state play he fell down n dropped it after hitting ground. Play was shielded from ref but replay crew claimed he bobbled it. I personally did not think so.

On this play he took at least three steps then dropped it out of bounds.

Completely different iyam.
