The SD owner told the city, the NFL, and anyone that would listen that he could not build the stadium on his own and needed a city bond deal. He almost left last year to be part of the new Los Angles stadium deal with Rams, but NFL wanted a San Diego vote. Since the Raiders were exploring the move to Las Vegas or LA, NFL really did not want any part of Las Vegas. When Las Vegas stepped forward (not a done deal, but it really is), it opened the door for Chargers to move. We will see how two teams in one stadium works. But the NFL supposedly agreed to this in principle last year, but made San Diego wait until now before finalizing it.
The NFL is not about the fan. It is about making the owners as much money as possible. NFL could care less about the fans of any city because the owners own and run the league. But the Giants and Jets already had rabid fan bases that hate each other. The Rams have history in LA (left once already) and Chargers are moving from San Diego to LA. It will take Charger fans up to 4 hrs to travel by car to LA. I doubt LA can support 2 teams because although Rams support id high now, it will fade rapidly if they do not start winning.
LA has a reputation of tepid support for almost all sports teams and have a hard time filling the stands long term. That is why the Rams left the first time and why the Raiders left to go back to Oakland. The new Rams owner is financing the new stadium himself so at least the LA taxpayer is off the hook. He can likely make finance payments off the rent he will charge the Chargers. How do you like the sound of the Las Vegas or Nevada Raiders? Oakland will be the next city abandoned. Las Vegas will probably float bonds to be paid by a hotel-motel tax. The Raiders know the NFL owners cannot stop them because the owners already lost a suit to the old Daddy Raider Al Davis. They already have a stadium in place and have proved they will support pro sports at a high level. Las Vegas and San Antonio are great cities. The Raider could certainly do a lot worse. That town will scarcely support one team, let alone two. I lived there when the Raiders and Rams both left town at the same time. The prevailing sentiment was, "Great! Now we actually get to see some good teams on TV". :rolleyes:

Until the Rams started to lose and they figured out Jeff Fisher is a terrible head coach that hires bad assistants. Then attendance fell off dramatically. Only the NFL and Fox Sports were pushing for the return of a team or teams to LA. They made it financially attractive and a billionaire took the bait. 20 years sounds about right for one or both teams to leave when another city mortgages their voters taxes to pay for the move. LA just has too many distractions and airheads to keep their attention on football. Unless they win big, they can go to (1) the beach, (2) the mountains, (3) yoga or exercise class, or (4) anywhere but LA. Because a fool and his money are soon partying.
