Thanks, Pirate. Never gets old watching videos of Doug.

We are from the same hometown and I had the pleasure of knowing Doug. When Doug came to Humboldt to visit family some of us high school coaches would have breakfast with Doug. We would have him come to practice and talk to the players and watch their eyes get the size of silver dollars because of his size. And they got to meet the man that the field they played on was named after. (Doug Atkins Field). Doug could tell some great stories that I still laugh at today when I think about them.

Doug was pretty much a recluse the last several years of his life...The last time I saw him was probably 10-12 years before he died. I played golf with his nephew and he kept me up on Doug's health until he died. I went to his funeral and I remember thinking at the cemetery how fitting it was on that cold Jan. 2nd day that Doug had said "He loved those cold Chicago games because when he hit the QB it hurt more."..LOL

Here's a old article on Doug....I was there among those 2,000 the night we honored and his old teammates roasted Doug Atkins. I was on the committee that helped put this event together and it was one of the biggest events the little town of Humboldt ever hosted. Later that night back at the hotel were we put the former Bears up in we sat in the lobby until past midnight listening to old stories....And those signs coming into Humboldt that says 'Home of Doug Atkins' are still standing.

Doug Atkins was just awesome. My dad always said he was the best Vol ever. These are some good articles about him. He was just a crazy Tennessean, like all of us are.
