12 is too many. Should a 10th, 11th or 12th ranked team be playing for a championship?  It will have 2 and three loss teams getting the same opportunity to win a championship as an undefeated team. You can put in 20 teams and it will still come down to the same teams each year like Bama, Clemson, OSU and a few others. I like four teams. It should be difficult to be in the play off.

I have always said 8. I still say 8. 5 from the Power 5 and 3 at large. I don't care if they make the conference championship game winner the automatic pick.

I agree with this. Four isn't enough imo.

One of the biggest problem with four teams is that it creates too much of a recruiting stranglehold for the top teams. Top prospects want the chance to play for national championships. Right now that means you have to go to Bama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, or maybe LSU and UGA to have any real shot year after year.

If conference champions are given auto-bids, many more teams at least get a shot at the title. My hope is that this would help to maybe level the recruiting playing field. There is no guarantee of that, but its at least possible.

We have blowouts with 4. Bring back the BCS.

Bama would have won fewer championships with a 2 team playoff.

I agree, bring back the BCS. It wasn't perfect, but it made every game of the count, and the teams had to schedule meaningful games in order to keep their strength of schedule rating high enough to keep their BCS rankings up at the end of the year.

The playoff scenario is crap because clemson/uga/ohio/that-other-school-west-of-georgia-that-isn't-Auburn knows that if they're ranked high due to the last season's success, all they have to do is beat up cream puffs to maintain that schedule through the year and maintain the high ranking, and they're in the playoff again. And of course, kids will go there so they can play for championships......things get easier because they have the lions share of blue chip guys.....rinse, repeat.

There should be little wonder why the last 7 seasons have been exactly the same for just about every college football team in the NCAA

This just ensures Bama, Clemson and Ohio State will never miss the playoff again. So if your team can't get in the 4 team playoff, let's make it eight. If it still can't get in let's make it twelve. Participation trophy. I think folks heads would explode if four or six of the 12 teams in the playoff were from the SEC.

That's not changing anything anyway, really.

In 7 years Bama, Clemson, OSU, and Oklahoma have taken 20 of the 28 slots.

Yep. And as a result, those schools get all the top recruits who want the chance to play for a championship. Wash, rinse, repeat. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Personally, I’m all for expansion. 12 is ok, 16 would be better. 32 or 64? Better still.

The hoops tourney has only gotten better every time they’ve expanded the field. Everyone poopoo’d going from 64 to 68 a few years ago, except since then a couple of those play-in teams have actually made the Final Four. Even our own team made the Sweet 16 out of the play-in round.

In football, the 4 team format sucks. And The BCS also sucked. I actually preferred the old Wild West postseason, when there were fewer conference tie-ins and every school was free to negotiate their own Bowl deal. At least you weren’t locked in to the same 2-3 games every year like you are now.

Maybe a 12 team playoff will make the postseason more interesting for everyone. We’ll see. But what we’re doing right now is not working.

Gotta disagree BDV. When UT hoops beat Memphis to claim the top spot in the polls it was incredible - and meant nothing in regards to the national title. The tournament has rendered the season meaningless.

When Auburn took out Bama with the kick six it wasn't just a rivalry win, but dashed the Tide's hopes for a title.

Should 3 loss teams even be eligible for a title? They might be now.

If they can survive the gauntlet of running through the tourney as a bottom seed, then absolutely they should.

Expansion is a good thing IMO, and to me the difference in 8 or 12 doesn't matter.  The only issue I see is that it's a two tier system, with the top tier of the four teams getting a bye likely to still consist of bammer, OSU, Clemson and OU, so in that sense it might not change much.  The other 8 teams will have to play that extra game.

Maybe in the interest of balance they could move the bigger teams down, but as long as it's humans making the selection, there will be pressure to put the repeat offenders in the top 4.

But at least it lets more teams in, and since 6 of the teams will be 'the highest six conference champions', it will give the mid majors their shot. I am all for that.  They can either back it up or be humiliated.  My money is on humiliation.
