Title: USF had 280+ yards on the ground tonight...
Post by: Creek Walker on September 18, 2022, 05:10:48 EDT
Obviously our strength is not our run game, but this is not the same Florida defense we have faced in years past. Traditionally UF enters this game with a very strong defense and a so-so offense. This Florida team is a little questionable on defense. Offense is probably their strength. Fortunately, their run game is much better than their past game, and that should play in our favor somewhat.

Our run game may not seem a strength, but last season and vs. Ball State we were surprisingly balanced if you look at total yards.  The split was 51/49 passing to rushing on the calls. I think we will run all over them. Hooker might go for 120, though I'm not sure I like him being exposed to injury so maybe best if he doesn't, but I can't see them stopping us on the ground.

I'd love to see us run all over them. As a point of comparison, WVU ran for 200+ against Pitt (pretty sure), but we didn't do much on the ground. The delta could have been due to it not being a point of emphasis. I dunno.

We got behind early and sputtered a few times.

I am definitely looking forward to seeing how well we run the ball Saturday.  :naughty:

Our RBs don't look so hot and they are banged up to boot.  Did ANY of our Rbs break a tackle vs Akron???  Pretty weak sauce in the backfield.  The had holes to run thru and had plenty of 1 on 1 situations and produced no big runs that I remember - maybe one.

If Hooker doesn't get a lot of yds on the ground, we might be in trouble.  Maybe our D can step in and create some turnover magic.

The lack of production from the RBs is due to lack of dominance by the OL IMO. The RBs rarely get more than a yard beyond the LOS before they're hit. I also think that throwing slants and to the TEs more would give the LBs more to be concerned about and prevent them from filling the gaps so quickly (Pitt's LBs did this extremely well).    :patriot:     :powert: :powert:

Throughout the first 15 games of his tenure at UT, Heupel has been a master of mixing in runs with passes in a creative way to keep the other team off balance, particularly when combined with the whole hurry up thing.  I have confidence that he will do so again on Saturday.

I do get that our RBs are not the second coming of Jamal Lewis and are also beat up a bit, but ... seriously .... WVU and USF were just slicing right through them. I see a big day for us on the ground, or at any rate an adequate one.

gaytors are giving up 195 yards per game rushing, which is 113th in the country

the question to ask, is are all three of USF, WVU, and Utah running powerhouses?  Here are their ranks....42, 28, and 30 respectively.  So all are "above average" but I'm pretty sure they all hit their season high vs. UF.  For the record, the Vols are 57.  I expect us to exceed our average of 174 ypg rushing.

Again, I feel better about this game than .... any?  Ever?  Maybe going back to 1991, after we beat them 45-3 in 1990.

What we haven't heard a lot of is the croc injury situation
Maybe that had something to do with it
Be interesting to find out
