2351  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: OK VTTW hipsters (all one or two of you) Don't miss this. on: February 27, 2014, 11:29:03 EST
Todd Snider
Todd plays two special solo shows this weekend.

Friday, Feb. 28th - Bijou Theatre - Knoxville, TN w. Amanda Shires supporting

Well, I don't think I would be considered a "hipster" by any means, but I have tickets for the show and look forward to hearing "Play A Train Song" among others.

I also saw a really good show on Tuesday at the Bijou - The Four On The Floor Tour, with The Josh Abbott Band, Stoney LaRue, Wade Bowen, and The Randy Rogers Band.  One of the better shows I have seen in a long time.

Amanda Shires is married to Jason Isbell (formerly of the Drive By Truckers), by the way.
2352  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: The Duck Commander Independence Bowl on: February 26, 2014, 07:24:44 EST
Problem is....they dont have a quality product.  Their duck calls suck and their hunting videos are even worse. Those are what they made their name on.

Buddy of mine who is a long time outdoors editor of a major newspaper and one of the most dedicated hunters around disagrees with you.  He says that they put some of the best products available on the market long before anybody ever heard of them because of TV.

Making a name is one thing.  Making money is another.  You don't make the kind of money they were able to make before they were ever thought of being a TV reality show by making inferior products.
2353  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: The Duck Commander Independence Bowl on: February 26, 2014, 07:00:31 EST
Good for them, they are living the American deam.  Start a small comapny that fills a need with a quality product, build that company into something that branches out and cashes in on the original success.  That' :thumbup:s a beautiful thing.

Also, they are people that many (not all or even a mojority by any stretch) can relate to.  Several of the family members have come back from very dark places to get a second chance, and have done well.  I say get as much $ as you can now, it will not last forever, that's for sure.

This, plus their "fame" has lasted a little bit more than 15 minutes.  The show is in its 5th season, now.  5 years is an eternity in television.

And to add, they have lasted and prospered from a ratings standpoint despite the best efforts of the left and its allies in the media to damage them both professionally and personally, and they have done it their way.  A&E executives tried to steer the show away from the Robertsons story of family, faith, and hard work, yet the Robertsons were strong enough and had enough support from their fans and supporters to cut those cut those attempts off at the knees.

15 minutes?  Not even close.
2354  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: #BringBackBruce on: February 26, 2014, 12:12:19 EST
I don't believe Bruce will go back in to coaching.  My feeling is that he will increase his role in TV guy.

2355  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: The Vols baseball team is 7-0..... on: February 24, 2014, 04:21:53 EST
I was there today.  This team isn't going to hit a ton, but they appear to have solid pitching and play good defense.  I certainly expect them to be a much improved team, and be competitive in the SEC.  It was good to see some excitement about Tennessee baseball at Lindsey Nelson again today.

2356  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: I guess I needed a reminder... on: February 24, 2014, 01:43:26 EST
I guess that makes sense. Thanks for bursting my bubble.

Sorry.  Just trying to stay realistic.  Not going to jump on a bandwagon that I believe has no wheels.  As UT fans we've been disappointed enough as it is.
2357  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: I guess I needed a reminder... on: February 24, 2014, 01:18:21 EST
Does anyone else find it unusual that he still lives in Knoxville? I'll put my aluminum foil cap back on and listen your your answers.

Given that his wife is from Knoxville, his family is here, he is working for H.T. Hackney (a Knoxville company), and that he was reportedly nearly a million dollars underwater (according to local real estate people) on his home when he was fired by UT, I don't find it unusual at all.
2358  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: So....who is available? on: February 23, 2014, 01:35:28 EST
I understand that Marshall is one of, if not THE most arrogant coach in CBB.  He's in a pretty good position at WSU, and he's apparently still pissed at UT for passing him over twice before.  And this time around, he'll have other big-time suitors. That's not to say we couldn't still get him, but he won't make it easy.

Not sure I want a coach who doesn't have a bit of arrogance in him.  Pearl certainly had his share and then some.

On Marshall, like Andy told Aunt Bea when the freezer went out, "Just pay the man!"
2359  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: So....who is available? on: February 22, 2014, 11:58:22 EST
Well, there is one coach tanned and rested available

And relocation expenses would be zero

He's going to be UT basketball's Jon Gruden.  Just not an option.

I like Gregg Marshall.
2360  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: A step closer to freeing the grapes on: February 22, 2014, 04:10:19 EST
I don't think buying wine...even if it's your first time brought on by convenience...equates to being a drunk. I would argue that those who purchase wine do not purchase it for its intoxicating properties. There are other products that are better suited to satisfy the needs of "drunks".

Yeah, that one left me shaking my head, too, Stogie.  Save us from all of the good people.

Not much better than a glass of good red wine and a fine premium cigar on the deck after dinner, as far as I am concerned.  But I guess that makes me a drunken reprobate in some people's minds.
2361  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: A step closer to freeing the grapes on: February 21, 2014, 11:17:06 EST

And wine is all over the place here in bammer.  Some convenience and even grocery stores seem to be getting taken over by it.  Which I don't think is a good thing (sorry Droner  ).  I really don't want the A in USA to stand for alcohol...nothing like a nation of drunks?

Selling wine in grocery stores isn't going to produce any more people who drink it.  It's simply going to make it more convenient for the consumer to purchase and allegedly more market driven in price than it is now.

2362  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: A step closer to freeing the grapes on: February 21, 2014, 06:58:16 EST
Put the brakes on any savings though....the bill that was passed by the house requires the grocery stores to have a 20% markup on wine in order to keep the big box retailers from undercutting the package stores!!!!   They also wont let the grocers sell on sunday since the package stores cant. There were amendments offered to remover these restrictions but they failed.  So, we may be able to buy in grocery and convenient stores but the savings will not be allowed. I think it sucks, should be about free market and what is best for the consumers.  JMO.

I understand.  But what we don't know is where that 20% will actually put the price point, and will the big retailers get a better wholesale price than smaller retailers will which would lower what that plus 20% will actually be.  There are still a lot of questions to be answered.
2363  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: The Bravos have locked up Andrelton Simmons up for 7 years. on: February 21, 2014, 02:31:01 EST
Maybe the outfield will open up to a glorious view of the Giant Chicken.

Well, that would make it easy to find the stadium, then.  Just go to the Big Chicken and hang a left.  Everybody knows where the Big Chicken is.

Gator lover.

I'm with Troy Landry when it comes to gators:

Passed the house 71 to 15 with only minor modifications.

Happy to see it.

We were in Kroger in Augusta before heading home yesterday and went down the wine aisle.  I bought a couple of cases to bring home, and saved about a third over what I pay for it in "package" stores in Knoxville.  I hope that trend carries over to us when wine is available in our grocery stores.
2366  Sports / VTTW Message Board / The Bravos have locked up Andrelton Simmons up for 7 years. on: February 20, 2014, 06:57:54 EST
7 years, $58 million.

I like it.
2367  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: What a glorious day in East TN on: February 19, 2014, 09:06:27 EST
Yep.  I got a day even better yesterday in Augusta, 73 and sunny - and got to spend it with my son, Daughter in law, and new grandson to boot!

Love these warm February days.  Spring can't get here soon enough.

2368  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Has anyone here heard of the Dirty Guv'nahs? on: February 19, 2014, 05:30:22 EST
One of my favorite bands.  Spent New Years Eve with them at the Tennessee Theater.

Really a high energy, and very talented group of guys.
2369  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Pretty good day for ole Herb and family on: February 17, 2014, 05:52:40 EST
My grandson - our second - was born today to my daughter in law, Julie, and my son, Billy - in Augusta.  He's 4 weeks early, but everything is great.  Evening being that early he still weighed in at 6 pounds and 13 ounces, and was 19 1/2 inches long.  He's Bill the 4th, by the way.

Mom, dad, baby, and Gramps and Gram are all doing well.

Oh, and apparently the earth quake is what sent her in to labor.

Our older grandson is almost 8 months old.

Read at USAToday.com a few minutes ago that there is snow somewhere in 49 of the 50 states today.  The only place that doesn't have snow is Florida.  Even the highest peaks of Hawaii have snow.

2371  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Top 99 most desirable women of 2014 on: February 13, 2014, 08:17:26 EST
Oh I am sure if they stayed just US, but if you look they went international with their picks. International, but missed a lot of people who are far more deserving. I guess it's a reflection of who their readers are. I have seen these types of polls in Asia too, and it's the same problem - light skin good, darker skin bad

But, Nut - we ARE in the United States where "white men" still make up a large segment of the male population.  Or are white men's opinions not valid in this day and time in America?
2372  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Insurance Question (non-political) on: February 12, 2014, 07:24:21 EST
There is no non political answer.  Your option is to get coverage through an Obamacare exchange.

What it will cost is varies based on age, who will be covered, and where you are.

All I can say is good luck.
2373  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Classic albums turning 20 this year on: February 11, 2014, 07:23:01 EST
Only one of those you listed that I have ever listened to is Blues Traveler Four.  Great album.  I am a Blues Traveler sheep.  Got everything they ever recorded, and I have driven as much as 500 miles to see their shows.
2374  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Wait - college students were partying, drinking, and playing loud music? on: February 10, 2014, 07:38:40 EST
I remember a time or two when on of my roommates asked the apartment upstairs from us to please lower it a notch or two. We were cool about it, and they were too. No biggie.

We left the cops out of it, and it had to be pretty stinking loud a couple of hours after midnight for us to care. We may have had an incident with a large number of fireworks over an extended period of time one New Year's Eve where we finally dialed it back out of respect for the neighbors.

Point being, 20 year-olds have to learn how to deal with each other, and be a good neighbor. I'm not terribly disturbed when they go through that process at UT or any other school.

You do understand that this wasn't a student based apartment complex, don't you, and that there were 80-100 people at the party? It wasn't a few people over for a little conversation.

The police asked them to turn the music down, and then they turned it back up.  If they ignored the police, do you really believe that they were going to turn it down because other residents asked them to?
2375  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Wait - college students were partying, drinking, and playing loud music? on: February 10, 2014, 03:29:18 EST
Don't the Knoxville police have anything better to do?!

Actually, they were answering noise complaints from other tenants of the apartment complex.  Don't see that the police were in the wrong.
