Prospects have to go to juco for several reasons, most of them not good ones. and more times that not because of academics.

Honestly, in this day and time if a prospect can't get an 18 on the ACT and have a 2.2 in the core classes, then they don't belong at a major university in the first place.

For every CP that comes out of juco, there are a dozen who either are busts or just plain wasted schollys.

Yeah but I can't help thinking of Cordarelle....
9452  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Vols 17 point dogs. on: October 13, 2014, 04:07:49 EDT
Yes.  Because it's Ole Miss.  Point being I never thought I would see the day that there was a 17 point difference in the two programs.

Yeah.  True story....end of August I was on a business trip and had dinner with two gentlemen who are MSU grads.  They both were excited about their prospects.  One said they would compete for the West and the other flat out said they would win it and could win the NC.  Even the other MSU fan didn't believe him, he was more like "we will be good, but....".

I thought he was smoking something, but he is looking pretty much like a prophet at the moment.

Maybe he'll do that right before the game and mellow out a bit.

Then again, some people get hostile while under the influence....
9454  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Vols 17 point dogs. on: October 13, 2014, 04:56:45 EDT
Why?  Because it's Ole Miss?  We have been bigger dogs in recent years to bammer and other such teams.

Ole Miss really is that good though.
9455  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Muschamp is truly disappointed on: October 12, 2014, 11:38:49 EDT
Right now, I agree they'll probably go 7-4.  But as we've seen before (including with this very UF team last year) when things start to go bad, sometimes a team will just pack it in.  When that happens, they're capable of losing to anybody.

Agree.  It's  a win win situation though.  Either Muschump is totally humiliated and run out of town on a rail, or he just barely hangs on and continues to suxes.  Either of those is fine with me.
9456  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Muschamp is truly disappointed on: October 12, 2014, 08:59:21 EDT
Fantastic.

BDV, don't sweat it. I expect Florida to beat Vandy and Mizzou with or without Harris, and also EKU.  They should be favored against the OBC, and with Harris they might just pull it off.

But they are gonna get dawg-whipped by uga and annihilated by FSU.   They are currently 3-2, so that's enough to get them to a bowl, with or without Harris.

The only game I think he makes a difference in is vs. the OBC, which is the difference between 7-4 and 6-5.  That difference likely is just enough to save Muschump's job, so it's a good thing.

Heck, I might donate a few bucks to Huntington myself....err, naw that's too sleazy.  But karma....
9457  Sports / VTTW Message Board / So we have four OL from last year on NFL rosters on: October 12, 2014, 07:31:46 EDT
Ja'won James was drafted first round and is starting for Miami
Zach Fulton was drafted sixth round and is starting for KC
James Stone was undrafted but is a third stringer for Atlanta
Antonio Richardson was undrafted but is on IR for Minnesota

http://www.wbir.com/story/sports/college/vols/football/2014/08/30/which-former-vols-made-nfl-rosters/14875781/

In 2010, when they were all frosh (except Antonio who came a year later) we gave up 41 sacks and only averaged 109 yards per game.  That's  3.4 sacks per game.  We are allowing 3.8 per game this year, which is worse, but not by a huge amount.  My point is that even though we had future NFL talent on the line in 2010, they struggled mightily.

If we can get a couple good OL in this spring to add depth and maybe even start at some point, and the current OL works hard, at some point next season they will begin to jell, hopefully just as whatever QB we are playing starts to "get it". Meanwhile I expect Butch will be bringing in his third consecutive top 5 class, and 2016 is going to look very bright.
9458  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: I don't expect gators to lose to Mizzou at home next week, but if they do on: October 12, 2014, 06:55:31 EDT
Other than UGA and FSU, they'll probably be favored in the rest of their games.  Would 7-4 be enough to save muschump?  I hope so.

Exactly...but if they have another losing season, I won't be too upset about that either.
9459  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: This was a good game because on: October 12, 2014, 06:20:19 EDT
That's what I've been saying- for the past 7-8 years, whomever we draw out of the West has been "up" in a big way.  It's uncanny.  MSU two years ago, Auburn last year, and Ole Miss this year.  Next year, I fully expect Arkansas to contend for the NC.

Well one thing we do control is our OOC schedule.  Which is firmly rooted in how good we were 10 years ago.

People like to point to Ole Miss and how they went 7-5 in Frieze's first year, but they played a ridiculous OOC schedule while we have played a FIZZLING TOP FIVE TEAM ON THE ROAD two years in a row now!

Enough....we should schedule teams like Washington and Texas Tech if we want Pac 12/Big 12 exposure.  Or even a chump like Texas, for that matter.

We have a better shot at OU at home next year obviously, but I hope we get some relief in the OOC category in 2016.  We need all the breaks we can get!
9460  Sports / VTTW Message Board / I don't expect gators to lose to Mizzou at home next week, but if they do on: October 12, 2014, 06:16:48 EDT
They might not make a bowl because of that game they cancelled.  I had forgotten about that.

Ummm....Go tigers?  Good news if they win...Muschump safe a while longer.
9461  Sports / VTTW Message Board / This was a good game because on: October 12, 2014, 06:07:55 EDT
There was no drama.  I wasn't worried that we would lose, but I was worried there might be a hangover from the frustrating loss last week, and we might let them hang around 2.5 quarters or so.  Didn't see any of that, which is great.

Obviously the sacks are worrisome, but in recent years under a different coach we might have looked sluggish in a game like this.  Saw a lot of positives too, especially on D.

I know this O line can play better.  I hope they prove me right later in the season.  In the meantime, Ole Miss is going to be very tough.

I thought Ole Miss would be the 3rd best West team this year, and I thought Auburn would be mediocre last year.

We truly cannot buy a break!
9462  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Great to see Muschamp SO disappointed. LOVE it* on: October 12, 2014, 05:39:37 EDT
I have a feeling Cheek will be writing another stern letter to the students after that game, win or lose.

I hope so.  He might be writing one to me.
9463  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: C'mon...the Vols o-line can't get beat by the Moc's d-line. I am sure it will on: October 12, 2014, 05:33:51 EDT
In the first half UT's running backs gained all of 22 yards on 11 carries.

Against UTC.

Hurd was mostly out...I guess he's still banged up.  Didn't see much of Lane either, I don't think.  Seemed like Butch wanted to work the young guys.
9464  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Great to see Muschamp SO disappointed. LOVE it* on: October 12, 2014, 05:32:29 EDT
I would take losses in the rest of our games if we could win that one.  Forget beating our rival and ending the streak, it would be worth it for the kiffin hate alone.

Yep.

They have a propensity to turn the ball over, particularly on special teams.  Barely recovered two fumbled kickoffs tonight, in fact.
9465  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: So on: October 12, 2014, 05:31:26 EDT
While I'm not a HUGE fan of going the Jr. College route, I'm not totally against it. Surely there are some decent ones out there that we could put on a short leash and take a chance on.

I think this line will continue to develop and be much better next season, and hopefully by the end of the year.  At the same time, I think it's clear we need more help there.  Definitely hope we have some good talent coming in and maybe snag a JUCO or two next year.  I don't think these guys are enough.
9466  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Help wanted: Defensive coordinators on: October 12, 2014, 05:29:33 EDT
I'd like to take this opportunity to once again thank that genius assistant at bammer for running off Bryce Petty.  What a disaster he would've been at UT.  We really dodged a bullet there.

Speaking of that genius, this is the second week in a row bammer offense has looked lethargic.

The best play of the night was with 3:46 left, it's third and short, and bammer has to call time out.

After which, they are promptly flagged for 12 men on the field.

Satan either has a such an enormous ego that he thinks "I am so good I can also coach up Lane Kiffin" or he is setting Lane up as a scapegoat.

Either way, I am loving it.
9467  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: So on: October 12, 2014, 05:23:58 EDT
It's probably going to be ugly.

I do think we can slow their offense, but their DL against our OL is frightening.  Maybe we can have some two TE sets or something, but...
9468  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Great to see Muschamp SO disappointed. LOVE it* on: October 12, 2014, 05:16:12 EDT
I was kind of rooting for UF early on, because I want Muschump to stick around.  But towards the end I was like, fizzle it, I want them to lose.

This loss must be every bit as frustrating to them as ours was last week.
9469  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: I can't remember our field EVER looking worse than it does today on: October 12, 2014, 05:14:58 EDT
Absolutely no excuse for it to be so bad.  The weather hasn't been an issue at all.  Whoever is now responsible for the field needs to be fired.

Coach Campbell needs to come back.
9470  Sports / VTTW Message Board / So I thought MSU might beat AU and they get this early int on: October 11, 2014, 10:08:14 EDT
This could end up being a bitch slap, perhaps.   I hope so.  I like Auburn, but their fans have gotten cocky and I also like MSU, so what the hell.

Off to watch Vols.....
9471  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: I'll just put this here on: October 11, 2014, 10:06:02 EDT
Yes, we are young.

That doesn't take away the fact that Florida was 2-8 in its last 10 and they beat us with a true freshman QB leading their comeback, and a true freshman running back.

You always stress the youth of replacement QBs.  You did that after the 2007 SECCG also, when the LSU starter (Rohan Davey??? can't recall) went out.

Well I believed in 2007 that the backup was actually better than the starter.  That happens sometimes.  In this case, without question, Driskell is one of the worst QBs I have seen in my life and I am not exagerating.  ANYONE is better than that guy!  Holy shizzle Herb, what game were you watching?  My phone was blowing up the whole game with my best friend from college texting "we better hope Driskell does not get hurt!"

You can make a case for a QB going out hurting a team, but not in this case.
9472  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: I'll just put this here on: October 11, 2014, 10:02:31 EDT
We ARE on our way back, not everybody has to believe it, but I do, and I don't even remember the last time I could believe it with honest confidence.

As I post below, it's the first time I honestly expected to win since 2006.  Hell, the only other time I thought we had a shot was 07, 08 and 2012, but I still thought we were and should be the underdogs.
9473  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: thrilled that uga is thrashing mizzou w/o Gurley on: October 11, 2014, 09:58:35 EDT
I only root for uga when they play the other red team.  I've never bought into, "We beat team A (or played them close), Team A beat Team B, so we should beat Team B."  I just hope we keep improving.  Also, it just feels like we've been bad for the past 14 years, it's not really the case.

I agree.  It's actually statisitcally provable that "Team A beat Team B and Team B beat Team C so therefore Team A beats Team C" is not true.  I have seen blogs on this subject as well as making my own observations over the years.

I am basing my opinion on Mizzou and USC on the entire season.  It's just that going into the game today, my working theory was that Uga is better than Mizzou even without Gurley.  I didn't expect the thrashing, but certainly if one team wins in a blowout, I want it to be the one we have already played!

So....whole season.  Not only has Mizzou lost at home to Indiana, they just got blown out by a team we almost beat that was sans their best player.  AT HOME.

You are correct that it takes more than one game to judge...it's just that this game fits well with the other evidence.
9474  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: thrilled that uga is thrashing mizzou w/o Gurley on: October 11, 2014, 09:54:48 EDT
Well, SC beat UGA, and Mizzou won at SC and smoked a pretty good UCF team.

SC always plays uga tough and vice versa.

NOT impressed by Mizzou winning at SC.  UK also beat them, and outside of the UGA game and that game alone, USC has looked awful.

We can beat both, and at this point I think we SHOULD beat MIzzou.  USC jr is on the road or I would issue a similar proclamation.
9475  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: 4* CB Abernathy commits to Vols on: October 11, 2014, 09:14:41 EDT
And the hits keep coming!

This is the no. 1 reason I am not that concerned with Jones.  Dooley and especially kiffin were supposed to be good recruiters.

Kiffin might have been but his only class was 10th and Fulmer had been doing just as well

Anyway whaT I thought when Dooley was hired was that maybe he can't coach but he can buold up the talent base.

WRRROOONNNGGG!!!

His first class shared with kiffin was decent but it was downhill from there with every season worse than the one before.

Well that's not the case with butch. He is recruiting as well as anyone in sec with the exception of the cheating dirt bag satan and he HAS to be a better coach than dools...who isnt!

No matter if he is the long term answer we will be better off if and when he leaves.

And the next coach ...if there is one...can have much quicker success as the base will be there.  See under "malzahn"
