Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: You people who are demanding an apology from Butch...

BDV - I think the issue is not that Butch apologize for the sake of apologizing. Rather, its giving the fans (and the world) a sense that he understands that there is a problem and he takes responsibility for the problem. I can recall - on a number of occasions - when the OBC, Steve Spurrier, came out on the losing end and said something like, "Heck, I got out-coached, we got outplayed, and that's not acceptable. We have to be better prepared and that starts with me." A simple, but passionate statement like that goes a long way toward putting people who care about the program at ease. When he says some of the garbage he's said, it just makes you wonder if he really does get it.
I want Butch to do well. But I think it is pretty clear that he's a mechanic. And on game day you need an artist.

I played college baseball and dipped from adolescence until a few years after I quit playing. It was the culture of ball that brought me to dip. I'm thankful I quit. While there are many health benefits (yes, I believe it caused Tony Gwynn's death), run the financial numbers of what you will save not buying that can or roll and you'll be extra-glad to give it up.
Best wishes to you - don't give in!

. . .if I said that I didn't pause for a few seconds after Palardy's kick before celebrating. Unconsciously, I was almost expecting to see some kind of flag or other previously unknown to me rule that we somehow violated as I stared at the :00 on the screen.
But, not today! Go Vols!!!!!

Much respect to the Lady Vols. The way they lost last night was brutal - tonight was an uphill battle from the first pitch. My take is they were probably the 4th or 5th best team in the CWS and they played their best softball when they needed to. It was a great postseason.

I'm a fan of TB and sad to read of this development. I don't get to listen to him often, but some of the funniest moments in sports talk radio happen on that show. It has been, for years, great entertainment. I hope those of you who know more about Knoxville media than me are correct when you say he will land on his radio feet again soon.

BDV - You are correct. Chattanooga's development was fueled by two rather impressive community-wide behaviors that Knoxville has sorely lacked. First, there were community leaders who provided the leadership to articulate and implement a compelling vision for the future of the city. Knoxville has struggled with this for decades, jumping from one bright idea to the next with no one willing (able?) to crystalize a comprehensive vision for the city's future. Heck, even Blount County - on a much smaller scale - was able to cement a community-wide focus a few years back when Maryville College, Maryville city, and Alcoa city came together to construct the Clayton Center for the Arts complex. Second, the families and foundations in the region who had the financial capacity saw fit to join together to do something big. All major philanthropy was directed to the city's development because that was the agreed upon plan. Community leadership and philanthropy have been the biggest, substantive differences between Knoxville and Chattanooga.

The other thing to keep in mind re: the firing/hiring timeline. I feel rather certain Hart will be very careful about how far to go with any prospective coaches until the Dooley firing is made public. It's kind of like having a girlfriend but telling another girl that a breakup is coming and you're going to start dating her. She may want to date you, but she'll probably say, "take care of your business with your girlfriend first and then we'll talk." And if she does start dating you before you officially break it off with the other girl, she always wonders if you are doing the same thing to her! If Hart doesn't handle it carefully and in order, he risks developing a reputation for being the kind of boss who will stab a coach in the back.
Yes, Hart can have some conversations about who has interest, but I'm rather certain he won't be out there hiring a head football coach when we publicly still have a head football coach.

Sports / VTTW Message Board / Jimmy Haslam to save Tennessee Football

New Browns owner and ardent UT supporter, Jimmy Haslam will hire Nick Saban away from Alabama to coach the Browns. In turn, Saban will rehire his longtime assistant, Derek Dooley and bring him to Cleveland. Discuss.

Sports / VTTW Message Board / The problem....

. . .with last night wasn't that we lost (for we've done that a lot lately).......it's not even that we lost to the Gators (we've done that 8 times in a row now)....or that the second half was a meltdown (we did that all last year).....
the problem with last night was that I started to care again.

D. Young is not the answer as a returner. I know this may not be a popular view since he is a local guy, but he simply does not have the speed to be a true threat. He has a decent amount of quicks, but, like the vast majority of the rest of our team, he simply doesn't have the speed.
