I don't know if that means that Butch is better or that Miles has just lost his mojo. Who would do you think is better? Miles biggest problem is he can't beat Bama regularly. He is 110-32. Tough crowd in Baton Rouge. But who has beat Bama regularly since Saban went to Bama? How does Freeze beat him then choke against the rest of the West.

Miles has never struck me as a football genius in any way, shape or form. But, for whatever reason, he just flat gets results. There is absolutely no justification -- none -- for firing a guy with a career record like his. LSU may rue the day...

I think they expect titles. Like they should. Like I expect titles from UT. I guess I expect more than some here do. Miles is a victim of his own success. No one has lost more underclassmen to the NFL than has LSU in the last few years.

won a NC but none of his wins are due to his abilities being great. He has gotten lucky on some really ill advised calls and somehow was dubed a genius by talking heads....once he let Chavis get away he was done. OL, RBs and Chavis D is what are responsible for 90% of his wins at LSU. I'd take Butch everyday over Les!

Why would you take Butch? Has he been a good coach this year? Would a better coach have beaten OK and UF and Arky? We just don't know. I do think there are better coaches out there than Butch.I still would not take Miles over him. To win the SEC you better have a damned good coach. Do we have that? I expected 8-4 this season. However, we should have won some of these games that we lost. All I am saying. But I am a Butch hater according to some. He has underachieved  this year as a coach in my opinion. For those who think he hasn't, I guess I just expect more from this program and coach than you do. When you have a chance to win these games, good coaches do. Why shouldn't I feel he blew the OK and UF games? Is a morale victory taking Bama to the wire enough? Is phoning it in against NTSU signs of a coach that keeps his team motivated? He needs to get this team past playing down to the opponents level. How much improvement have you seen from this offense? It is game 12. This offense should be hitting on all cylinders. But you get one good game and two bad games. What is the problem?

Seems legit.

Why would you take Butch? Legit question. Is it because Butch is so good, or Miles has become complacent at LSU. I would take Butch because Miles has become complacent. They are more alike than you want to admit. Both great recruiters. Coaching?

in and year out has great talent (every position but QB). Butch has taken a team that was completely depleted of talent and recruited the players that he has won with, having to coach up freshmen and sophomores to fill the positions while Les is playing with 2nd and 3rd year players consistently. Butch has taken a special teams that has been not special and made it one of the leading return teams in the nation. Butch to put it simply, has had to coach to get, hopefully, 8 wins playing freshmen and sophomores while Les will have 8 wins playing a seasoned team full of NFL talent....Butch is a much better coach. Do I agree with every play call or game strategy, no, but I do not believe that Les, if given the same exact situation, could have done what Butch has done.

We all expect titles, but after six consecutive seasons of 7 or fewer wins, like it or not, 8-4 is a break through.  Expect titles all you want, but by your own admission you expected 8-4 this year so you clearly were not expecting a title.

There are two parts to this.

One, it's correct to expect greatness when all the pieces are in place for that to happen.  This is the first year that has even been partially true.  Next year it will be more true, and my expectations for next year are correspondingly much higher.  Sometimes it's not reasonable to expect a title and that was certainly true of 99.9% of Vol fans this year.  Only the lunatic fringe thought we would win the SEC (and yet it now looks very reasonable...so arguably Butch has exceeded expectations!)

Two, it's not reasonable to expect a title every year, ANYWHERE, even if all the parts are there.  The SEC is too good and there is too much competition.  It is reasonable to expect that in any given year, we HAVE A SHOT at a title.  But seriously, there are some fans who think the Vols should win 8 consecutive national championships because they "have standards" and "the coach makes millions" and "it's what we should expect".  Those people are idiots.

Who is the exception to no. 2?  Earlier this year, people like you loved to compare Butch to Freeze and McIllwain, but the bloom is already off those two.  I myself thought highly of the guy at Texas A&M but he has stumbled badly this year.  SOS and Pinkel are out, Miles may follow them.

What makes Satan so great that bammer is almost always in the picture?  He cheats at recruiting.  Bammer has as much talent as the next two teams combined.  ANY coach could win with that talent.  But Saban is a really good coach, so he wins a lot.  If bammer recruited like LSU instead of like no team in the entire history of CFB ever has or ever will again, they would be more like LSU over the last 6 years and less what they have been.

Les has been the luckiest coach in college football. There's hardly a richer recruiting ground than his locale and he does great in landing those 5*s. That said, he has made some of the dumbest on the field calls in the history of football. Some of them paid off because the talent on the field was able to overcome his stupidity.

1 point separates Ut from the secc. Another 7 points separates them from talk of playoff. I accept Butch's explanation that Ut suffered late in games because of a lack of depth in the depth chart. Hell that is what everyone on this board has been talking about since dooley. It calculates. Butch won at cincy with less competition than he faced in the sec. That suggests a harder road ahead for the effectivness of his system but the results suggest it is working. Afaic Butch has thus far justified his hiring.
