He is considered a top candidate for Auburn

What makes anyone think an NFL coach with a losing record is a good candidate for the SEC?

If only someone had tried that before, we would have a data point....

You mean like Nick Saban?

Before Matt Rhule was an NFL coach, he built very competitive programs very quickly at Temple and Baylor. He took Temple from 2 wins to 10 wins in 2 years. He took Baylor from 1 win to 11 wins in 2 years. Good option for Auburn, IMO.

Did you miss that my comment was ironic?

but TBH, I was really talking about Kiffin

In the meantime, a really good friend of mine that comes from Old Money in Chatanooga played golf with an AU BOT a few weeks ago and said they were targeting Kiffin

Which turns out to be true based on news reports today.  No surprise.

My take...I'm not sure Kiffin wants the AU job.  I guess we will find out though.

Also, smoke screens are always part of this.  I saw the LSU AD interviewed on Finebaum the other day and he said that a false rumor started about Gundy. He dug into it, and it was based on LSU shipping something to Stillwater using one of their planes, don't recall what was being shipped, but it had nothing to do with athletics.  But the plane was spotted with the LSU on it, and the rumors started.
He said that there was zero chance they would go after Gundy, but it was "a useful distraction" so he actually fanned the rumors.

Who knows.  We will find out when we find out.  Would not be surprised if its Kiffin, but less surprised if its not.  Frankly, to the extent that I could put myself in that joker's head, I would not do it.  Just look at how Auburn has treated 3 of their last 4 coaches.  Chizik is the one I am leaving out, as he deserved what he got IMO.  But Tubberville, Malzahn, and now Harsin were all undermined in the worst way possible.

Again, Harsin I think has some responsibility for his own woes, what with the firing of the WR coach being bungled and Bo Nix for some reason transferring.  But what Au did to him was still awful, and should give any coach pause.

Having said that, I would not mind seeing Lane of all people get screwed by Auburn the way they did those other coaches.  There would be a great deal of karma in that.

I think he just wants out of Oxford, to a place follows through on their commitments to him

A whole lot of people think this. Why not? The entire corupt state government  is behind it and you can get away with just about anything. Of course he would take it.

That bammer would offer is less clear to this observer. I would almost say unlikely, but first let's see how lame handles the neat of his schedule. Their first 7 games were a joke
