If I could go back in time and be a part of any musical era, it would California in the 70’s. Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, CSNY, Petty, CCR, etc. So much great music came out of that time/place.

So “Daisy Jones and the Six” on Prime is right up my alley. It’s a biopic about a fictional (though clearly based on Fleetwood Mac) band, with some fantastic music (both curated and original) and amazing performances. Riley Keough should win everything this awards season. If we can’t have an official authorized Fleetwood Mac biopic, this is the next best thing.

I read up on Fleetwood Mac recently, because I got interested in the song "Dreams".  The dysfunction was truly amazing, with three couples breaking up during  the making of Rumors, with two of the couples in the band (Fleetwood's wife was not in the band but they divorced).

What I never realized until reading it, was the following:

1. The song "Dreams" was specifically written by Stevie Nicks about Lindsey Buckingham (her long time boyfriend she was breaking up with).
2. The song "Go Your Own Way" was specifically written by Lindsey Buckingham about Stevie Nicks.
3. The song "You Make Loving Fun" was written by Christine McVie about an affair she was having with the lighting tech...while still in the process of gettting divorced.  And John McVie, her soon to be ex, had to play it, whether he liked it or not!

How fizzleed up is all that?  Fun fact...Stevie Nicks was offended by the "shacking up" line in Go Your Own Way, and would often storm out of the studio over it.

But...in the aftermath of her breakup, she had a brief affair with Mick Fleetwood, and dated three different Eagles.  So....   I mean, the ability of these entertainment types to be blind to their own BS just amazes me.

Oh yeah. There have been a lot of these biopic movies about various musicians over the years, but FM is conspicuously absent. Their story would probably be the holy grail of that genre.

But seriously, watch Daisy Jones and the Six. A lot of the Fleetwood Mac elements you mentioned are portrayed in the show.

BTW, Stevie Nicks REALLY got around in those days. Tom Petty was tapping that, too. In fact, she’s openly stated that if Petty had ever invited her to join The Heartbreakers, she would’ve left Fleetwood Mac on the spot.

I think I will check out the show...I have Prime, so why not?  It helps that I am a HUGE fan of Riley Keough   (Elvis's grandaughter for those who did not know).

If you haven't seen it, check out "Logan Lucky", which is billed as the redneck version of "Ocean's 11".  (they knock off the Charlotte Motor Speedway lol). 

It's not a great movie, but good and very entertaining (IMO).

But I'd be lying if I didn't admit half the reason I watched it was for Riley.

I think FM was formed in 1967... ahem, you know, the summer of love  Many of those boomers from that era repented and brought us the conservative revolution  BUT, I know lots of ordinary folks with similar love life's. Multiple marriages, free love, what have you. Small towns in particular. Everybody loves everybody

The original was, but Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks didn't join until 72 or 73. The first album they were on had slow sales at first, but then did well as they were recording Rumours, which led to the studio becoming much more patient. I read that they took over a year to record Rumours and that would never be allowed in today's market.

BDV, I did watch the whole thing last week (to the detriment of a whole bunch of RL stuff I need to get done  )

So I think you already know this, but the back story of the band is significantly different than FM.  Biggest difference is that Stevie was already dating Lindsey when they both joined the band.  Lindsey is who Fleetwood wanted, but he agreed to take them as a package.  Their relationship was already on the rocks but they stayed together a long time for the sake of the band, but finally during Rumours they just couldn't take each other any more.   

That is a LOT different dynamic than Daisy pining after Billy and him manipulating her.  Also, no one was from Pittsburgh, most the band was English, with the exception of Lindsey who was from Cali (I think?) and Stevie Nix was from Arizona.

Also, unlike the series, Stevie Nix was supported well by her parents in her music career.  Her father was a musician, and they encouraged her to pursue music, and she was actually very close to her mother.

So there are some big differences.

Here are some similarities I noticed though.

1. Stevie Nix was said to be very protective of her writing, and would in fact tell off producers who wanted to change it just like Daisy.
2. She did briefly have an affair with Fleetwood, but that is about the only resemblence to Daisy's dynamic with Billy.
3. Christine McVie did dump her husband during Rumors, and so I think the Karen character is loosely based on her.
4. Lots of sexual tension between Karen/Grahm and Daisy/Billy, but again the Daisy/Billy dynamic was way off the reality of Lindsey/Stevie. Karen/Grahm was a lot closer to the Christine/John McVie dynamic though.
5. Obviously they had a huge hit record in 1977 fueled by all the tension...this is by far the main similarity IMO.

Anyway, it was a very enjoyable watch. I didn't like the end that much where (spoler alert!) Billy's wife tells him from beyond the grave in a video to "call Daisy".     That seemed kind of Hallmark netoworkish to me. Yes, it makes me feel good that they might finally get together, but its just silly. I think I would rather have seen them get drunk at a media reunion and then have a one night stand they both regret, because that would be more true to life.   

Also, I have to say the Karen character - played by Suki Waterhouse - was by far the finest female in the show.  Riley Keogh has looked good in other films, but in this series they did her makeup to look like a raggedy ole hippie, which is not really "my type". 

I DID really appreciate the way Suki looked in this one though.   

Overall I did like it, I would say it was above average to good, in spite of the anticlimatic (IMO) ending.

Oh forgot to mention....I read that the series is based on a book, and the book was in fact inspired by FM.  I suspect the book might be closer to the actual band.  These series shows often take great liberties when adapting a book.  Or maybe I should say, almost always do.

So I googled her, and apparently she dated Leo DiCaprio before aging out on her 25th birthday. So we know she’s at least open to older men. So you’re telling me there’s a chance.
