76  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: College football recruiting looking like the Wild Wild West on: May 27, 2021, 10:01:05 EDT
The college game is surely going to change. I think that much is inevitable.

I'm not optimistic that this will improve the experience, especially for the older fans among us.

I can remember a time when I could list the starters for every major league baseball and basketball team. Now, i don't even watch MLB or the NFL.

Me too. It is liberating to finally grow up.
77  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: You must be new here. on: January 31, 2021, 03:43:51 EST
I'm gonna disagree.  Make an example or two, the leaks will dry up.

Or not.

But definitely get rid of the leakers.  Why not?

Leaking suggests a lack of character.

Yet they keep expecting unwavering support. Who okays these decisions?

The administration is not expecting anything. Fans with any sense are not expecting anything. All any body can do is HOPE for the results desired. Plus 90% of coaching hires end in failure. Many here consider Fulmer a failure. Fans?
79  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Fulmer to retire on: January 19, 2021, 08:10:17 EST
Of course we would've. Ego is a powerful thing. But once you remove ego from the equation, I'm not sure hindsight was needed to know that resigning was the best for all involved. I said in '07 that I wished he would go ahead and resign. Because, if you remember, that season wasn't exactly a thrilling success. We backed into the SECCG (and would've beaten eventual national champ LSU if not for two pick-sixes by Ainge), but we should've lost to Vandy, needed four OTs to beat UK, and also needed OT to beat South Carolina (but USC was good that year). Struggled against Arkansas State. Maybe the highlight of the season was thrashing UGA. But we lost to Alabama and Florida by a combined 100-37, and to me those 2 games defined the '07 season, even then. The writing was on the wall that our biggest rivals had left us in the dust. If I remember correctly, it was after the conclusion of that '07 season that Vicky said Fulmer would like to coach for 8-10 more years before retiring to Montana. That seemed laughable at the time, considering Fulmer's days were clearly numbered at that point. Less than a year later, things ended the way they did. Hindsight is a powerful visionary but I believe a blind man could've seen that coming. If he gets out of the way just 1 year earlier, we probably don't wind up with Lane Kiffin, which means we don't wind up with Dooley, which means we're not sitting here in 2021 on the verge of scholarship restrictions and a postseason ban and wondering what joker is going to want to take over this cluster.

We did not get better by getting rid off Fulmer. look at the record since he left. He had two losing seasons in 15. half of the 12 seasons since we got rid of him we have lost more than we won.
80  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Fulmer to retire on: January 19, 2021, 12:11:30 EST
Even though Fulmer isn't implicated in the alleged violations, I can't help but feel that he has permanently tarnished his legacy at this university.

I wasn't a fan of the Fulmer hire as AD, and I was certainly a fan of his termination back in '08. I still feel he did UT a disservice by staying too long, and I also feel that Johnny Majors' claims were more than just sour grapes. But as someone who cut my teeth as a CFB fan in the late '80s and the '90s, I'll always have fond memories of the Fulmer era. He should've ridden off into the sunset after the '07 SECCG and let that be the end of it.

We say what he should have done. After the fact. That’s easy. The truth is  all of us would have done just what he did. When you accomplish what he did, you will believe you can do it again.
81  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: With only 4 teams making the playoff, is it any surprise that the same on: January 14, 2021, 05:43:36 EST
What makes you think being a conference champ from a weak conference makes them better than a 2nd, 3rd or 4th place SEC team? What if an 8-4 teams wins their CCg. Should they be in? I am for the top 8 ranked teams and use the old BCS formula. Conferences be damned. I want the 4 or 8 best teams . Period.

you will not get the 8 best teams doing that.
82  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: OFFICIAL: Steel to be Def Asst on: January 14, 2021, 02:45:15 EST
Just honest. Is Steel the answer? If they fire Pruitt will he step up to HC? If Pruitt stays, I see him and Steele bumping heads. Do you really want two defensive oriented coaches running things?  We are offensively challenged.

he is like every new coach. he may be the answer and he may not be. probably plus 75% of them are not the answer.
83  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Auburn is in the process of making our last coaching search look GOOD on: December 23, 2020, 09:10:42 EST
none of that  will matter if they get a successful coach. all will be forgotten.
84  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Vandy just fired Mason on: November 29, 2020, 10:46:14 EST
It appears that some teams aren't using covid as an excuse...

They are 3 years late by message board standards.
85  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: The flavor of the month on: November 18, 2020, 02:26:42 EST
We are not in a position where we are attractive.  Even if we "backed up the brinks truck", which we won't, those types of names would laugh in our face.

We're gonna either have to get really lucky (doesn't look like that's ever gonna happen for football) or we're gonna have to take a guy with some warts.

Any team that gets the the coach thy like 3 years after the hiring-----is lucky. Most new hires end up failures'
86  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Wee Willie Weinke on: November 12, 2020, 09:04:55 EST

I don't see it that way. As someone posted on another site, Shane Matthews was fifth string at Florida when SOS got there, and he ended up being SEC First Team two years running.  Is Harrison a bust already, or are our coaches just not developing the talent?

And FYI, Weinke is the QB coach, not the OC.  A guy who had two years of doing that for the Rams then got fired.  Again, not impressed with his resume.

Maybe our QBs will turn it around prior to season's end.  I sure hope so.  Not holding my breath though.
[/quot

Every QB is not just a better coach from being Peyton Manning. Some of them are just not good enough.
87  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Wee Willie Weinke on: November 11, 2020, 08:37:48 EST
I thought he had a bit more depth as a QB coach.  Somehow thought he had actually coached at FSU for a while.

Nope.

Was QB coach for St. Louis Rams 2015-2016, which was his first coaching stint.  Fired after 2016 season, worked as an offensive analyst for Saban for one year, then came to UT.  Pretty thin coaching resume.  Offense did improve last year, but so far has gone backwards this year.

Was RB coach at UT in 2018, so now in his second year as QB coach. Not impressed with what I have seen. Maybe send him back to RB or some other slot and let Tee coach the QBs.  Or whatever.

Main reason I post this is I thought he had a lot more experience as a coach than he does.

no offence coordinator is going to look good with the QB's we have.

You hear they might not play this weekend and are relieved.
89  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: So, stupid question.... why are we still playing JG... I mean the season is on: November 08, 2020, 03:45:08 EST
already toast.  Saving a redshirt?

We should not. You learn nothing from the second kick off a mule. We have let the mule stomp the sh&&& out of us.
90  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Game Thread: Arkansas on: November 08, 2020, 03:41:09 EST
Bad coached team.....And no we aren't beating Auburn.

Bailey should have been gotten ready after the KY game....Coaching malpractice

We conceded the game the first half when we let JG only throw 8 times for 47 yards because they have no faith in him......Like Ark was going to let us keep running it....They adjusted at the half and our non coaches didn't. Pruitt is done....he'll be here another year but he's done. Next we'll probably watch recruits start jumping ship.
[/quote

The season is lost. We need to get Bailey experience for next year. And spare fans of seeing the QB’s we have been watching.
91  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Outscored 88-7 last four games in the 2nd half on: November 08, 2020, 02:56:30 EST
Great coaching

Pruitt cannot get them to play the whole game. Probably the worst problem you an have.
And, you cannot win without a QB. The season is lost. It needs to end with an experienced Harrison Bailey.

92  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Game Thread: Arkansas on: November 08, 2020, 04:08:59 EST
My read on what the announcer just said he was told by CJP:  I don't want to put my young QBs in harms way so I'm not playing them.  Also I think that's why JG isn't very good - because of all of the lumps he took early in his career.

Did I interpret that incorrectly?

Then suggest he go play for the band. If you are worried about safety
93  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: So, if you had to make the call...... on: October 18, 2020, 02:40:21 EDT
I’m not real happy with very many people on our coaching staff right now. Not Pruitt, not Chaney, not Weinke and not Friend. I can’t watch next week if JG trots out as the starter. I’ll turn it off and go hiking. There comes a point where you just get tired of subjecting yourself to the misery.

Today was a disaster of epic proportions. Let’s not kid ourselves: that team quit. They flat out quit. It was an embarrassment. And I think it had everything to do with the dysfunction at QB.

I am not happy with the effort the players had yesterday. as in there was none.
94  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Let me state this as simply and succinctly as possible on: October 18, 2020, 02:36:13 EDT
If JG starts I will walk out of Neyland

QB is a problem. But yesterday was a lack of effort. And seems to be a growing problem with many teams.
95  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: So, if you had to make the call...... on: October 17, 2020, 10:10:02 EDT
I would start Bailey. This isn't a vintage bammer defense, and even if we lose (which we will), he could still put up some big numbers. Doing so against a "name brand" like bammer can be a big confidence builder for a young QB.

probably time to practice for next year. However QB is not the only position we are weak at. Even the ol is disappointing.
96  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: I hope there is college football this fall. They are talking about on: April 21, 2020, 09:46:34 EDT
Right.  And Eason went to  Washington and did okay I guess, will be interesting to see who goes higher in the draft, as both have declared.

Fields has lit it up at OSU, and you really have to question Kirby Smart's judgement in letting Fields go for Fromm.

The bottom line is out of those three, what do they have to show for it? A good rookie year from Eason and what I would graciously call an above average career by Fromm.  Big deal!

And since you mention it, uga did haul in an exceptional amount of QB talent.  Bammer had Tua, who BTW did not with a national championship, in fact, he stunk it up.  LSU won the lottery with Burrow.

Yes those teams did well, but look how many crap QBs Florida has had.  Texas A&M can't seem to get any consistency.  Hellinski was the next great thing at Junior.  Until he wasn't.

I'll grant you this, it's unusual in the still run-oriented SEC to see traditional schools like bammer and LSU airing it out so much. It worked for LSU, not so much for bammer.

Yes Uga had a great run of QBs, but they stayed mostly run-first, and while Fromm managed the game well enough for them to be really competitive, in the end Smart hasn't done anything better than Richt  Richt also went 12-1 and won an SEC championship, and I know you are going to say he never won a playoff game, but there weren't any semifinals back then.  If there had been, uga would have been in and very likely won the first round, if not the whole shooting match.

The notion that Tau stunk it up is silly.

Okay my bad cop routine has run it's course. You guys have had enough. I get it. We are all on the same side. I will just be a Vols fan from here on out. But I reserve the right to criticize any Vol coach or player when it is justified. These coaches make seven figure salaries. They need to have their feet held to the fire.

You are not a cop in any sense of the word. You have nothing to do with the coaches. Nothing. all you can do is get on a message board and bump your gums--as my grand mother would say.
99  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Sheesh.....that was ugly........ on: February 19, 2020, 09:08:24 EST
Bite me. He is a good coach. Never said otherwise. I just don't think he is an elite coach. But he is making elite coach money. He IS typical Barnes. Has  good teams that seem to underachieve when it matters. He had some really good teams at Texas, including the Durant led ones. He had a good team last year that won 30 games that didn't even win an SEC title. The team was ranked number one at one time but choked down the stretch to end the season. He is a real good coach that is making elite coach money. He will have to start producing elite results in the next couple of years. Is just making the "dance" enough for you tools to justify his salary? Not me. What makes you think just because he makes more money now it is going to miraculously make him an elite coach? Why did Texas let him go? How many years do you give him to win 30 games again? Asking for a friend.

The only way Tenn is going to have an elite coach is to pay a good coach elite money and hope he becomes elite.
Tenn is not Ky,Duke etc.
