76  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Another example of this staff working hard on: December 03, 2013, 04:01:46 EST
I appreciate their efforts and it appears to be paying dividends.
77  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: What's left - Offense on: December 02, 2013, 04:41:48 EST
Same ole same ole....look Jones has been successful at every stop.  He had the first year at Cincy where he was 4-8 but then he won or shared the Big East title two years in a row.  According to some on this board Ole "Flip Flop" Urbanator's offense would not work in the SEC, but he won TWO National Championships with that offense.  So before you pillory this coaching staff (which you have done since the hire was made) how about taking an approach that is more wait and see than questioning every DAMN thing they have done.  In fact you were questioning their ability to recruit in the SEC.  Convinced they can recruit in the SEC yet?  If not see Rankings and realize you were in error concerning that.

Oh and BTW who should UT have hired......Gruden??????

You have me confused with someone else. I have made comments about the staff during the season based on things I have seen in the games. Have never questioned their ability to recruit, was sold on Butch since before the season. You better go back and recheck that statement about the recruiting and what I have said about Butch when he was hired. Letting your desire to disagree with me cloud your memory I am afraid.

And you picked that one response out of all the other comments in that post to comment on? Kind of telling IMHO. I knew it didn't show up exactly like I had planned. Thought everyone could figure it out. I will go back and fix it now.

Never was excited about the Gruden talk. He did good with other coaches players but could never assemble talent on his own in the NFL. That is the one thing a college coach has to be better at than an NFL coach.
78  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: What's left - Offense on: December 02, 2013, 05:44:22 EST
OL:  Jackson, an experienced Guard returns after a RS.  Crowder will most likely start at center.  Kerbyson (OT) and Wiesman (OG) most likely will be other starters.  The other OT?, possibly Kendrick.  Reserves?  Pair and the incoming 4 stars.  I would not be surprised if a true FR gets a shot.

OL will not have the accolades but could still perform good enough for a transition year on the OL. Still no depth.

TE:  We need one or both the highly rated TE recruits to come in and start.  We have NOTHING in the cupboard at this position.

Put 20 lbs on Croom and move him to TE. Would be a match up nightmare.

WR:
Outside receivers:  North is a Given.  Croom really improved during the season and was perhaps the only consistent blocker in the WR group (our two longest runs this year were due/helped by blocks by Croom).  Both have the size we are looking for, especially near the endzone.  Josh Smith showed an ability to get separation and has good speed, just has problems catching the ball. The incoming FR will get every chance to play.
Slot:  Pig, Johnson and Young provide good depth at the position but all need to improve in various areas.

These guys need consistent play out of the QB as much as anything. If we get that they will look a lot better.

RB:  IMO Lane is not an every down SEC back and he still spends far too much time auditioning for Dancing with the Stars, but provides good depth.  Maybe another year of coaching would help .  Hurd probably best chance to come in and start

Lane does dance some but has better vision than Neal and typically falls forward. Hurd will have the skills but can he make the jump to SEC level from the start? We need him to be a quick study.

QB:  Wide Open.  3 of the 4 returning QBs played.  The one that did not I find the most intriguing is the one who didn't play as he was the first off the bench till his injury.  I tend to agree with others that Ferguson has the most upside.  It will be interesting watching spring practice.

I don't know who will emerge at QB but I suspect that either Dobbs or Ferguson will be the man. The other two have not showed enough yet.

Coaching:  Really not sold on Mahoney at OL, IMO we took a step down from Pittman.  Maybe with younger players they will be more responsive to what is being taught.  Coach Jake needs to be  less afraid for the players to fail.  When he was so inclined this year the offense performed well, within the limitations of the personnel.  I really like what Gillespie and Azzanni did this year with their players.  Elder didn't have much to work with.

No secret I am not sold on a lot of the coaching. I hope these guys are quick studies too. Knew there would be a learning curve, there always is for new coaches in the SEC. Thing that work elsewhere do not work here. Any change likely won't come until after signing day so lets see what happens.

79  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Glad we beat KY, even more glad bama lost! on: December 01, 2013, 02:04:52 EST
Off season is upon us, lets see which players sell out in prepping for next year. Also looking forward to seeing what Butch learned this year and what adjustments are made. Looking forward to seeing what the EE's can do in the spring. Depleted as we are we need these guys to come in and play and play well, especially the jucos. Signing day is just about 3 months away and should be a banner year.
80  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Cuonzoball on: November 29, 2013, 07:58:21 EST
Now guys, he just doesn't have any talent to work with, roster was gutted, give him time to get his guys in there. Its way too early to tell if he is a good coach or not.

81  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Personal observations... on: November 26, 2013, 02:00:55 EST
My personal observation:

Let's get this damned season over with, get in the weight room, recruit like mad men, and get ready for spring practice.

And an addendum:  And please re-evaluate the coordinators.

82  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: The losing mindset-- these are uncharted waters for Butch on: November 25, 2013, 04:08:38 EST
I agree. This senior class was completely messed up by dools mind games. 3 years of crap typically do not get fixed in 1 year.  Year 2 of more positive reinforcement and a demonstrated care for the person instead of what they can do on the field will help shed that attitude even more in year 2.
"It's a mindset" I think refers to this issue without calling out and players or ex-coaches.

That said if our Juco's come in and produce right away we may go bowling next year, provided we improve on both sides of the ball. Butch and his offensive have definitely had growing pains this year which is typical for new guys in the SEC. I expect him to critique himself and the staff during the off season and adjust accordingly. They does not mean he will fire anyone, or that he should but they do need to rethink some things, this ain't the big east or the MAC.
83  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: I have a very specific criticism of the defensive scheme on: November 24, 2013, 03:00:19 EST
a couple of points
It is one of their standard plays
Defending it involves two playersThe corner has to fight through the block to either make the tackle or influence which way the receiver goes off the block.  In this area we actually had some success (Coleman more than Sutton).
The other player is the safety/5th DB.  Last night in almost all cases due to injury/formation/defense it was Swafford as the 5th DB.  All to often he was slow to react, why I don't know.

WOOHOO! Looks like I got one right!
84  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Lost in all the brouhaha over the 4th-and-inches play... on: November 24, 2013, 02:34:51 EST
I think he made the 1st down, but he didn't get the spot and the replay angles didn't show conclusive evidence to overturn, same thing on Pig's overturn reception. Problem was we got two fumbles calls overturned that gave us the ball earlier, replay guy was probably felt under pressure to "even" out the calls.
85  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: I have a very specific criticism of the defensive scheme on: November 24, 2013, 02:31:27 EST
Vandy ran a WR screen about 15 times, and it was good for 4-8 yards every time. What is with that? Why are we so weak against that play, and why wasn't an adjustment made before this game (that has been a weekness for weeks, I feel).

We tried to run a very similar play with Pig several times, and it never worked. Is it just a matter of the other WR for them blocking and our guy can't, or is it defensive scheme?

Simple execution. They did it well and we did not. Our lack of ability and foot speed keeps us from closing out on that play, plus it was probably our formation as well. Without looking at film it was probably an automatic call every time we lined up a certain way.  Its like free money.
86  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: The wait for this signing day might be the most tense we've ever experienced... on: November 24, 2013, 02:27:03 EST
I suspect Butch to put together a great class. Probably stay top 5 anyway and that is plenty good enough. The reality is we just 3 or 4 more just like it to get us back in the picture, but we all know that.
87  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Coming soon to a bookstore near you... on: November 24, 2013, 02:24:08 EST
If it weren't so sad and true it would be funny. As it is the whole thing is making me sick.
88  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Let's talk criticism of the coaches on: November 24, 2013, 02:22:38 EST
Don't really see the 5 yr old part but if we are going to start calling everyone out on everything that is said we don't agree with or like................ then let the games begin. This should be fun even if it is short lived as I don't suspect TRO will be much for the gaming.
89  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Let's talk criticism of the coaches on: November 24, 2013, 07:25:11 EST
no apologies

I knew generic was kin to someone but couldn't remember who.

Color me not surprised.
90  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Our "bowl" game will be... on: November 24, 2013, 07:00:39 EST
To be totally honest, the way I feel right now I couldn't care less what happens vs. UK.  I'm ready for this dreadful season to be over.

I agree. I will be shocked if the team doesn't play like that next week too.
91  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Let's talk criticism of the coaches on: November 24, 2013, 06:58:19 EST
I'm at a loss to understand this thread. If I'm correct, you're upset because certain unnamed posters took to task a certain other unnamed poster or posters because the latter unnamed poster(s) were criticizing the coaches and now the parties of the first part are now themselves criticizing the coaches. Is that it?

If so,....I"m still at a loss to understand this thread.

You are correct but let me see if I can clear it up for you. I called into question the ability of the OC in particular two weeks ago. I had a fairly harsh critique about him and didn't think he would last. I was severely taken to task for that. I say severely because it isn't like I am a newbie here and don't really make a habit of calling out staff on game day. I even defended kiffin.....for awhile. Regardless the slams came at me and I don't expect others to agree with me about everything but this was a little more than typical disagreement. Another poster personally known to more board members than I gives critiques every game day, sometimes good , sometimes not......nary a word is uttered in opposition. I understand why. People take the comments of people they know more than people they don't. I can live with that, its understandable. (I made that known in a PM to another poster)

What we have today is a pointing out of that fact and it obviously makes people uncomfortable to the point they attacked the person pointing out the inconsistency. That is also typical behavior for people. No one likes to have things pointed out to them, me included.

To take some of the guess work out of who is who and why they care what was said to whom the party in question is my oldest son, which explains his interest in the topic. He thought I was treated unfairly and said so. I know better than to expect fairness from people, even though I try to impart it on everyone else as best I can. So this thread can go on and on, or be locked or whatever but this same person who is "self loathing" whatever kind of slander that is supposed to be, spent from Nov 05 to Nov 2010 in the Army with 2 tours of duty in Iraq. He won't like me mentioning that as he did not like his time in service, but he did it and did it to the best of his ability.

I made the point I wanted in another thread. As far as this thread goes, I don't really care about what is discussed, or how, but the insults need to stop.

92  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Let's talk criticism of the coaches on: November 24, 2013, 06:18:56 EST
I have had criticisms of the coaches going back to the Florida game if not earlier. Everyone has the right to criticize. They do not have the right to assume everyone will agree with their criticisms.

I agree with this, and I never asked anyone to agree with me.

I call it as I see it..

You may get a thorough tongue lashing. It just depends.
94  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Our "bowl" game will be... on: November 24, 2013, 05:01:07 EST
Not impressed with this coaching staff after this game..a fake field goal on 4th and forever? Vandy had lost all defensive backs and UT tried no deep passes or passes down the field..After having a week off..I saw no real preparation for this game or adjustments in the 2nd half

We can't question the staff.

97  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Through 3 games, it is safe to say Josh Richardson is highly improved on: November 19, 2013, 04:44:30 EST
Watching the highlights of the game I have to say our freshman pg is smooth as silk. He never looks out of control or rushed. He plays calm. Will be interesting to see how he responds to an aggressive defender. Between him and Barton our pg play should be vastly improved. Richardson became a good mid range shooter last year, if he can improve his 3 ball it helps us a lot, as you noted.
98  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Through 3 games, it is safe to say Josh Richardson is highly improved on: November 19, 2013, 04:05:01 EST
They have to learn to play together again. When Maymon got hurt before Stokes was lost. He learned how to play without him last year. This year he has to learn to play with him again. Maymon has to get back in the groove as well. He may get back to old self or he may not. Only time will tell on that .
Guard play should be improved.

We are not a final 4 team by any means but we should make the dance and win 1 game at least. The last couple years teams with really good bigs or better than average guard play have killed us. This year our biggest flaw will be playing teams with a good big guy. Our bigs still play below the rim.

Always enjoyed the phrase "string music".
100  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Does Auburn beat the Tide? Just a question , are the SEC defenses having a tough on: November 18, 2013, 08:02:39 EST
Coaches are just adopting some different offensive philosophies which are leading to more points. Like when Spurrier started at uf he had the SEC on their heels dealing with his passing attack. Upgraded talent on defense to get to the QB mitigated that for him and even if he never left his tactical edge was over. Defense's will still be dominant, but not shut everyone out dominant every year. Too much attrition when the really good teams have a lot of junior's leave with the seniors. You will still be good, just not dominant. Still the biggest difference in SEC teams and OOC teams is defensive size and speed, especially up front. SEC DE's & LB's have been killing the other teams in championship games.
