13776  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Will our run game improve against open date? on: September 24, 2011, 02:29:38 EDT
They have given up zero yards rushing this year, combined with our struggles running I look for negative yards once again.
Doubtful, I don't see the OLgetting much push ...

I need a win over UGA to feel better, honestly.

I believe that you (we) get it.

Yer too old to remember in any case ...

Hit it well, sir.  Fairways and greens.
Well, I have a 1300 T-Time for a "prospective member" tourney at a local country club.  I have no intentions of joining but I will enjoy a free round of golf, food and cold beer!
13781  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Eric Russell makes a case for how special teams lost the Florida game on: September 23, 2011, 12:34:33 EDT
You keep dwelling on that, and it is important, but their average starting position after kickoffs was only at the 24.  That is worse than the 20 from a touchback, but not by much.  Actually only one kick failed to get inside the 10, while one was right at the 10.

Here is the total summary

Kickoff to start game - 69 yards to the 1, returned to the 20
Kickoff after first TD - 58 yards to the 12, returned to the 35
Kickoff after second TD - 67 yards to the 3, returned to the 20, BUT an illegal block put it back to the 10
Kickoff after the FG - 60 yards to the 10, returned 15 to the 25
Kickoff after the third TD - 69 yards to the 1, returned 31 to the 32

There is room for improvement, but on the possessions where Florida got past the 20 (3 of the 5) they also failed to score.  I really don't think it was as bad as you seem to think.

I would agree, though the 2nd was the only bad kick looking at them live.
Three were good kicks with good heigth and pretty good distance.  Where your stats do shine is our coverage unit (of which the kick hang time is a key factor).  Our lane discipline has bee very good this year.  On the last I think we missed a tckle that allowed some extra yards but for the great majority of our kicks the coverage has been excellent, average return has beenslightly less than 18 yards (we have averaged 23).  For further reference punt returns against us have averaged a little under 6 yards (our punt returns average only 4.5).

All that being said, I'm not unhappy with our kickoffs. kick and punt coverage.  We really need to improve punt returns and there is an overall lack of aggresiveness on KO returns.

13784  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Receivers on: September 22, 2011, 07:21:34 EDT
So it looks like the startes will be:
X - Da'Rick Rogers
Y - DeAnthony Arnett
Z - Zack Rogers

not sure I undertand moving Da'Rick to X but hey the coaches get paid to make those decsions ...

Who will be the backups?
My views:
X - Dallas (Needs to pick up the offense quickly as I suspect he will need to know both X and Z)
Y - Who?  Anderson?  We heard a lot of good things when he moved over but nothing really since the season started.  He needs to step up.  Neal?  Who looks more and more like a receiver now.
Z - Milton (he has the size for the Z, the question is he finally ready for some PT?)

Bottom line is that the injury to Hunter has highlighted the issue that we are thin at receiver, with regard to both warm bodies and more improtantly, with regard to experience.

Welcome aboard.

Would Ga Tech be a good fit?
They did this  to the SEC once before, why would we want them back?
OTOH, given the sheer quantity of NCAA issues the SEC has, they would fit right in ...

Thank you, sir.  I enjoyed it as well. It was fun talking trash about Pirate and the rest of the VTTWers  .
So that's how it is eh ...

I vote for the mighty Mocs of UTC.
Tailgate at BDV's place!
13789  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Dooley on conference expansion on: September 21, 2011, 02:44:17 EDT
That being the case, what makes you think Missouri would go to the West and Auburn to the East?
I think it was in the aTm time frame, Auburn represetative said that they would do what whas in the best interests of the SEC, including moving to the East (they are the most Eastern of the West division teams).
13790  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Dooley on conference expansion on: September 20, 2011, 11:08:14 EDT
I think Mizzou would go to the west and they'd shift Auburn East

That is my understanding
13791  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: I am shocked at UF's rushing yards on: September 19, 2011, 10:56:24 EDT
You're right. I thought of that right after I posted.  The scrrens and quick outs probably SEEMED like runs.  But for all that they "only" had 228 yards passing.  Overall they had 362 yards total offense which is decent but not great. Had we not given them a short field so often the outcome might have gone our way.  Regardless I like the way our d played and IMO we showed considerable improvement in thisa game. The consistency is not there but IMO that is exactly what can improve easily as young players get experience.  Think how young we are at lb and how much they are likely to improve....
Agree 100%
13792  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: 2012 on: September 19, 2011, 10:38:34 EDT
The Jr plays at LT... Thomas is the only JR. All the others are sophs. I'm assuming you're talking about trading Bullard for Marcus Jackson, which I would support. I think Bullard is the weak link. Stone has to fix the snaps though.
My bad, I thought Bullard was a Jr, he is a RS SO.

Even with Stone's bowling for $$ Saturday I think he is better than the alternative from a blocking perspective.
13793  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: 2012 on: September 19, 2011, 10:11:25 EDT
I think we have enough at RB now because I think Lane is going to be really good, it's the OL that must toughen up as you say. Going into the game I wondered about OL and front 7 on defense... the thing that really stinks that I never considered is that we don't have enough speed at DB.

But... I don't think we are that far away. The OL is very skilled athletically, they are just young. At least that's my hope. Either we need more time to jell or they need better coaching.

I also saw a lot of promise from the frosh LBs, although they didn't tackle well and AJ made a mental error on Rainey's TD. Those two things come with time. Their athletic ability is the kind that we need to compete.

Right now I just think playing 17 freshmen and sophomores is too much to overcome. I expect a big leap next year. But UF is really young too, so we aren't the only team who should improve.
I think the only change I'd like to see on the OL is trade a Jr for a true FR at LG.
13794  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Speaking of Danielson, what was he smoking on the first Bray int? on: September 19, 2011, 10:08:03 EDT
No, it was the D. Bray did not see the DB at all, he got baited into the throw.

It was a very bad dcesion, period, dot.  Even IF he gets the ball to the area Da'Rick was in, Da'Rick was covered VERY closely and the only area the ball could have been caught in was OB.  In that situation, as he did in the 4th quarter in a similar situation, throw the ball away.

Accoring to the NCAA BYLAWS, no

14.2.4 Hardship Waiver. A student-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition by the conference
or the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement for reasons of “hardship.” Hardship is defined as
an incapacity resulting from an injury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: (Revised:
8/8/02, 11/1/07 effective 8/1/08)

(a) The incapacitating injury or illness occurs in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition at any
two-year or four-year collegiate institutions or occurs after the first day of classes in the student-athlete’s senior
year in high school; (Revised: 1/10/92 effective 8/1/92, 11/01/01, 8/8/02)

(b) The injury or illness occurs prior to the first competition of the second half of the playing season that
concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport (see Bylaw 14.2.4.3.4) and results in incapacity to
compete for the remainder of that playing season; (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01,
4/3/02, 4/24/08)

(c) In team sports, the injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three
contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 30 percent (whichever number is
greater) of the institution’s scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or her sport. Only
scheduled or completed competition (including exempted events but excluding scrimmages and exhibition
contests identified as such in the legislation) against outside participants during the playing season that concludes
with the NCAA championship, or, if so designated, during the official NCAA championship playing
season in that sport (e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitation in calculating
both the number of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has participated and the
number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition during that season in the sport. Dates of
competition that are exempted (e.g., alumni contests, foreign team in U.S.) from the maximum permissible
number of contests or dates of competition shall count toward the number of contests or dates in which the
student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition
in the season, except for scrimmages and exhibition contests that are specifically identified as such in
the sport’s Bylaw 17 playing and practice season regulations. Scrimmages and exhibition contests that are
not exempted from the maximum permissible number of contests or dates of competition may be excluded
from the calculation only if they are identified as such in the sport’s Bylaw 17 playing and practice season
regulations; and (Revised: 1/10/92, 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 3/10/04, 5/11/05, 8/4/05,
4/26/07 applicable to student-athletes who initially enrolled full time in a collegiate institution on or after 8/1/03,
9/18/07, 4/24/08)
13797  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Based on what we have seen so far, I think we beat SC and UGA on: September 19, 2011, 07:49:39 EDT
Ummmm, because as you quoted, Bossman believes the Vols will lose to either the Dawgs or Cocks ("with losses to LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, and either SC or UGa."  So, with the Florida loss added, it's 7-5.  I think he knows that it could be 8-4; he just doesn't think so.
How ya doing TRO?  Hope the pain meds are working their magic!
13798  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: The difference between us and them on: September 19, 2011, 06:43:48 EDT
Give some credit for hitting our TE all over the field, and for getting the ball to Arnett (to whom my reaction was, "who the hell is that?").  I was surprised that we did not throw to Poole more, but you do know that Lane scored a TD on a pass right?   I also don't think losing Hunter is a trivial thing to get over!  Let's also not forget that the gators got called for Pass Intereference 6 times!

I agree we could have thrown to the RBs more (but maybe when you are behind you throw downfield more?), but other than that I was really happy our passing offense did as well as it did after Hunter went out.  I really don't think that was our problem Saturday.
Poole hardly played in the 2nd half.  I saw him in for 2 plays the entire 4th quarter.
13799  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Based on what we have seen so far, I think we beat SC and UGA on: September 19, 2011, 06:31:15 EDT
Running game is weak but prior to saturdasy I thought it looked a bit better than last year.  Its worth pointing out that we had some success on our first drive and that we completely abandoned it at some point.  Looking forward to seeing if we can improve vs. Uganda.
OTOH, we essentially abandoned the running game about a third of the way into the game Saturday.
13800  Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: What Coaches do you think are on the hotseat in the SEC? on: September 19, 2011, 06:15:30 EDT
I think Ole Myth will let Nutt stick around for one more year.
I don't know, this is the same school that fired Cut one year removed from tying for 1st in the West .  Nutt hasnt come close to Cut's record and, oh by the way, Nutt has lost to that "school down South' two years running.
