Bama doesn't need any help this week. Mizzou has no chance.....well, slim and none and slim left town.
If the Tide plays as poorly most of the game as they have at times, the Tigers will win. Bama has been inconsistent this season, and Mizzou will be sky high for them. Very impressed with their coaching staff. Their defense has forced many turnovers this season, and Bama hasn't. Anything can happen. BG

Tennessee State has offered my granddaughter an awesome scholarship to come play softball with them. My son is checking the school out well.....we know it's traditionally black school -- currently about 30% white. But she likes the area and he's checking out other schools too.
Congrats, Granny! I know you're proud of her. BG

No....that was Slive on the grassy knoll......He was in communication with the Warren Commission telling them to omit the part about him telling the refs to look the other way on Bama and screw Mizzou.
True, Phil. We both saw this happen first hand. If these SEC plots were real, imagine all the money these refs could make after their retirement with a tell all book about Slive's machinations. Why, these refs would be running to book publishers so fast it would make their financial advisors head swim. OK, another proposed topic: Paul is Dead. BG

I would agree that the lack of pressure has helped the OL, but another thing that has helped them as much as anything is the front 7 now have to be a bit more cautious in their play or they will give Dobbs rush lanes. It helps give them just that little bit of an edge they did not have earlier and as we can see it makes a huge difference especially on the road when noise keeps the ol from hearing the qb much of the time.
Good point as many defenses scheme that way with a running threat at QB. They attempt to close down those running lanes in the middle, and try to contain him and not let him outside where he has the option to run or throw. BG

Curry was part of a movement by the then-President of bammer (and no, I don't recall his name) to make it "not all about football anymore". Thus the great unwashed masses of half-sentient knukle-dragging yard apes ran them both off, and Curry had a brick through his window for good measure. See record of most anyone at Kentucky...meaningless. Curry was a good coach IMO. No bammer will ever say he was, and that won't change, so we can just agree to disagree. Curry was one of the few brave souls that tried to bring some desperately needed class to bammer, and failed miserably. Perception vs. Reality... BG

Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: If it is illegal for a defensive tackler to lead with his head........
|

While at times you do see an offensive player lower his head and use his helmet deliberately to strike the defender at times in the head, other times the head is lowered with no such intent and the contact still happens. Anyone who has strapped on a helmet knows how quickly things happen on a playing field, and understands such contact due to the speed of the game, and actions and uninticipated movements of the opposing player, often causes unintentional contact with the head. If a player is truly targeting another can be subjective.
That being said, I think the rule was intiated as a response to mostly protect "exposed" players, and correctly or not, they are usually thought of as offensive players being most vulnerable, such as wide-receivers going across the middle of the field watching the ball and not the opposing players while a defender gets ready to level him.
If it's demonstrated enough that offensive players are guilty of this, then we'll see the rule changed since they're trying to reduce concussions, and the NCAA is concerned with future litigation. You don't see it as often from an offensive player, and whether right or wrong, that's why I would guess we haven't seen the rule include that side of the ball. I would think the NCAA would be monitoring this and watching closely as concussions are such a current and important issue.

One last thing on this...."Gary Higgenboom". That was the QB for bammer in the late 80s that was FOURTH STRING, that had to patiently wait while they cycled through a whole bunch of highly rated duds. When he finally started, they were 10-0 going into the first Iron Bowl at Auburn in late 1989, and at that point were very much in the running for the MNC.
In spite of being run oft from Tuskaloser, Curry was a pretty good coach who did well at GaTech and actually did pretty well at bammer but got run oft by the boosters who hated him for supporting academics and being from GaTech.
Why did he not figure out Higgenboom was the guy in preseason practice? The answer is, you really don't know what you have until the young man is tested in battle conditions.
My opinion is that the mental and intangibles are just as important, if not more important, than the physical ability. The only way to truly test that is in a game. But if you test it prematurely....see Peterman last year.
Well, Gary "Hollingsworth", a three star QB recruited as an afterthought to two five star QB's-Billy Ray and Jeff Dunn. He started far earlier than the Auburn game, in fact took over in the second game as Dunn went down in the Kentucky game with a knee injury, and from that point Hollingsworth led them to a 10-0 record going into the Auburn game. That's really neither here nor there, but only clarification. What I disagree with is as follows: That's just not true on Bill Curry and academics, and in fact far from it. Curry once made a disparaging remark on the state of the players' progress when he took over at Alabama from his good friend and former Colt teamate, Ray Perkins, whom he had received a recommendation from for the Bama job. Within hours of that story being published, Curry was met personally in his office by Perkins who had taken the Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner's private jet to T-town where he proceeded to verbally take apart Curry piece by piece. What Bill Curry had said was absolutely not true, and he was left in good shape by Perkins in the academic sense, and Ray Perkins was proud of that academic record and had put great effort into seeing his players perform in the classroom. Prop 48 was passed by the NCAA during his tenure and would go into effect several years later, and academics were increasingly stressed by Perkins and President Joab Thomas; they had improved them. Perkins as AD even built the athletic department's first academic center. Who did leave the program in academic disarray was one Mr. Bill Curry. Upon arriving that winter Gene Stallings had inherited a mess. During his first A-Day game it was customary at the time of year to publicly release progress reports and averages in comparison to the student body for the athletes by sport at Alabama; the team's record was dismal. Upon arriving in the stadium these were passed out to many. I know because I was there and read it. Before the game, with just a few fans in their seats, Stallings went into those same seats and while standing on one expressed his concern and disbelief on his players grades that he inherited, and publicly promised to the players' parents and fans much greater attention and effort would be placed on academics, which they were. It never ceases to amaze me what some believe about Curry that the facts do not support. Bill Curry talks a good game, with "talk" being key. And no he wasn't a "pretty good" coach. See his record and dismissal from Kentucky for reference. BG

But have played much easier schedules http://stats.ncaa.org/rankings?sport_code=MFB&division=11We have played the 5th toughest schedule in the country, while UK is 34 and Mizzou 58. That ranking is based only on win % of opponents and doesn't factor in any other type of measure of opponent. It definitely understates things. The highest ranked opponent (at this moment) faced by MIzzou is uga and they killed them 24-0 at home. Of course, UK played MSU pretty well in Lexington, but then again MSU almost lost to Arkansas last night. At any rate, while both teams are certainly capable of beating us, they have played ridiculously easy schedules compared to us with the exception of Kentucky playing MSU and LSU (and look what LSU did to them on the road). One reason I thought you guys were better than apparently some Vols. Last week, I think a few didn't either appreciate, or fully understand, just how tough the opposition has been. This team is much more physically tougher than last season and that says someone has been coaching them up. Impressed with the mental toughness demonstrated against USCe by coming back late in the game with two touchdowns. BG

Hurd brings an element UT has lacked for several years; he can turn a two yard gain into a four yard gain. For some, that may not sound so impressive, but others they understand the huge importance of that ability. He can keep the chains moving, and that is critical. He keeps the offense on the field, and just as importantly, the opposing offense on the bench.
That ability along with his speed to get the edge and make a long run brings UT a big-time back that they haven't had for several years.

The neighbors next to us do it up big with decorations, eerie music with speakers, and their teenage sons dressed up as the monster Jason chasing people while roaming their yard. Last year they even had a real hearse. We therefore get plenty of kids and parents. The neighbors give out two to three hundred dollars worth of candy. It's that big a deal. Got to take our twin grandchildren out in a wagon in the neighborhood for their first Halloween. They just turned one and loved the ride while seeing all the people. He was the Cookie Monster complete with lights on part of his head, and she was a bumblebee. BG
