Hyams said yesterday that the Gruden talk had hit a "snag" and he feels there is now less than a 5% chance that Gruden will be UT's next coach. As I said yesterday, Hyams nailed it three years ago when he axed the Cutcliffe rumors while most media people were reporting it as a done deal.
I was told today that the snag was Gruden being floated $6 million/5 years guaranteed offer and it not being enough, and that there is now virtually no chance that he becomes UT's next coach.
I would never go put something like this on VolNation or somewhere and open myself to ridicule, but just for the sake of discussion, I think this forum is pretty tame. I'm not one of those people who goes around claiming to have sources. But this comes from someone who is very well connected, and it is the same person who emailed me and told me Kiffin would be named coach in 2009 the day before the story broke. So I trust what I'm hearing here. Obviously I hope it isn't correct; I've gone all in on the Gruden speculation after being really skeptical early.
To balance that (and at the risk of sounding like the Grudenville posters over in Arkansas
), I have also heard that there may be an announcement tomorrow or Monday. If there were an announcement tomorrow, and perhaps even if there were an announcement as soon as Monday, it almost certainly wouldn't be about someone who is currently coaching. So who does that leave?
