Punishment: Should have been: In ten years, Manziel will be peddling his signature at Caesar's Palace next to Pete Rose, and flying back to College Station on weekends to crash sorority parties- where he'll be referred to as "that creepy old dude".

I've enjoyed seeing the Ohio State fans crying foul today, but the NCAA just dealt itself a very serious credibility blow (if the NCAA had any credibility left).

Yep. I think this is the haymaker that staggers the NCAA as we know it (well, this and them taking the law into their own hands with Penn State). Ed O'Bannon might just be the knockout blow. In ten years, today's BCS conference schools will probably just break away and form their own governing body. Which will inevitably run into the same problems eventually.

I am embarrassed for the NCAA. Why make that statement? 30 minutes of a meaningless game that A&M can win without him playing? Somebody needs to hit the reset button at the NCAA HQ.

Well dam, if it had been a whole game I'd be okay with it.

Seriously though, I think the NCAA's hands were tied. They could not prove he took money and none of the dealers are going to provide that evidence.
But let's face it...like Cam, Manzel is a ratings gold mine. It does seem there is a double standard for top players with the NCAA these days.
You can't say for sure that's what it is, but pile this on top of Cam and it sure looks that way. Perception matters in things like this, so...
I think there needs to be major reform in college athletics, but I have no idea what it should be. At the end of the day, schools are going to pay for players and look the other way if they think they can get away with it. It's well known that the way around the NCAA is to transfer funds, money, cars, houses, whatever to relatives. The NCAA can't check the records of relatives, and so long as the people handling the funds don't squeal (which went horribly bad for Reggie Bush, but that's a rare exception), teams are going to get away with it by and large.
There is a ton of money in college football these days, and money corrupts. It's a big problem for sure, but I don't know what you do about it, other than Congress passing legislation that allows the NCAA to subpoena financial records...which seems draconian, but i think that would clean things up a good deal.
