Seeing it reported on several sites that SOS will retire from South Carolina after the season? Can't believe he'd announce anything this early.

Don't blame him if true....

He might be retiring immediately.

Wow, won't be the same without HBC.

Immediately. Cocks naming an interim tomorrow morning, and Spurrier holding a presser tomorrow at noon.

Also being unofficially reported that he has a tee time at Augusta National on Saturday morning.

I hope he deposits about a dozen Titleists in Rae's Creek.

This is incredible. What ELSE is going to happen today? I mean, I expected Spurrier to announce his retirement on any given Monday after a Gamecocks loss this season, but immediately? Who saw that coming??

Depositing a dozen Titlesits in Rae's Creek is still much more enjoyable than coaching the Gamecocks this year.

Something must be up for him to do this suddenly. Just don't see him walking away like this in the middle of the season.

Many Gamecock fans expected him to retire at the end of the season although not during the season. He hasn't had a losing season as a college coach since his first year at Duke. Maybe he saw the handwriting on the wall for this season.

I suspect he was told he would be retiring at the end of the year by the admin and SOS decided that playing golf on Crescent Beach was an activity he would pursue sooner rather than later.  In other words

I think that was the problem. Recruiting had fallen off. Spurrier hates recruiting and his assistants weren't getting it done.

Can he still play there if not the HBC anymore?

I didn't realize -- or maybe I had forgotten -- until I went back and reread Pat Jordan's 2013 expose on Spurrier that it was Dave Hart who resulted in Spurrier leaving Florida. When Spurrier accused Florida State of intentionally injuring a Florida player, Hart (then the AD at FSU) said that someone should "spank" Spurrier, put him to bed, and "hope he wakes up all grown up." Spurrier threw one of his classic Steve Spurrier temper tantrums, and demanded that Florida's most influential supporters file a lawsuit against FSU because of Hart's remarks. When they refused, Spurrier called his agent and told him to find him an NFL job.

Spurrier is an ugly, vindictive bully. I won't miss him.

Why not?  He's a member at Augusta National.  His membership isn't tied to USCe or anything else.

IIRC, coaching USCe is why he has the membership.  When he hired on to USCe, there was speculation that it was at least partly for that reason.

But ICBW.  Every once in a great while it happens.
