Works for me! We badly needed a good win. Cuonzo's teams are perplexing. Every time I think we're on a roll, we lose an inexcusable game. Every time I think that all hope is lost, we win one against a quality opponent.

Nice post. It will be interesting to see whether he has the personality to get the fans fired up between now and spring practice. Obviously it will come down to wins in the long run, but he has a great opportunity to get the fans onboard if he has the "right stuff" to get out there and do it. If he can get fans over their current overall discontent and can draw a big crowd for the Orange and White Game, it would certainly be a good start. Hmm, I may have to look into going to the O & W game for a first time in a while.

Sports / VTTW Message Board / Looking at the Vols 2013 schedule
|
on: December 07, 2012, 06:53:44 EST
|
2013 Tennessee Football Schedule Date Opponent Location Aug. 31 Austin Peay Knoxville Sept. 7 Western Kentucky Knoxville
Of course, we absolutely have to win these first 2. Extra points for Corch Jones for looking dominating in them. WKY is a lot better than AP, IMO.
Sept. 14 at Oregon Eugene, Ore. Sept. 21 at Florida * Gainesville, Fla.
We're probably not going to win either of these games but it sure would be nice if we could keep it competitive and the defense spent more time looking at the front of opponent's jerseys than at the back of them.
Sept. 28 South Alabama Knoxville
Better be another cupcake
Oct. 5 Georgia * Knoxville Oct. 12 Open Date Oct. 19 South Carolina * Knoxville
I sure would like to win at least 1 of these 2 games. That would be a sign that Butch is really beginning to turn things around. Blowouts in one or both would be discouraging.
Oct. 26 at Alabama * Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Will be a Butch Jones fan for life if he can pull this off but I'm not expecting it.
Nov. 2 at Missouri * Columbia, Mo. Nov. 9 Auburn * Knoxville
Both of these games are winnable, IMO. Losing them both and I will be bitching like Pirate.
Nov. 16 Open Date Nov. 23 Vanderbilt * Knoxville Nov. 30 at Kentucky * Lexington, Ky.
Both of these games are winnable as well.
Conclusions: Brutal schedule, 8-4 is doable but everything would have to break our way. Since that hasn't happened in quite some time for this program, I am gonna predict 7-5 and the Music City Bowl. Deere Lowered, not against UNC again, please!

Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: Coach Jones will be introduced today at a 2:30 p.m. press conference...

The story (link in the "News" section at the top of the board) has been updated and includes a couple Jones comments:
"It is truly an honor and a privilege to be the head football coach at the University of Tennessee," said Jones. "I understand the values, traditions, and level of expectations that come with this position, and I look forward to being a part of the Vol Nation. "I'd like to especially thank Chancellor Cheek and Dave Hart for giving me this great opportunity, and I look forward to the Vols achieving excellence both on and off the field for many years to come."
Standard stuff, but.... Still no link to watch the press conference live as far as I could tell.
WATE will have it at 2 pm http://www.wate.com/story/20286123/butch-jones-named-head-football-coach-at-utKNOXVILLE (WATE) - University of Cincinnati head football coach Butch Jones was named Friday the next head football coach at Tennessee. University of Tennessee officials say Jones will be introduced at 2:30 p.m. Friday in a news conference in Knoxville. 6 News will carry the news conference live on WATE and WATE.com beginning at 2 p.m. Jones replaced Derek Dooley, who was fired from the head coach job one game short of three seasons. Jones met with team members early Friday in a closed-door meeting to tell them he had accepted the Tennessee job. Jones was head coach at Cincinnati, where he earned a 23-14 overall record and went 12-9 in the Big East Conference. The Bearcats finished the 2012 regular season 9-3 (5-2), and tied for first in the Big East. Cincinnati will play Duke on Dec. 27 in the Belk Bowl. Last year, Jones' team beat Vanderbilt 31-24 in the Liberty Bowl. Jones and his wife, Barb, have three sons

OK, can you say without a doubt that Hart did not contact the agents for any or all of them? Did he ask and was told no interest? You do not know. I do not know. Would it make you feel better to know how many coaches turned us down? No one knows but Hart. So we will never know.
Since the whole coaching search appeared to be done publicly, I would say that we DO know and that we only offered Strong and Jones (though we obviously would have offered Gruden if we thought he would take it)

Sports / VTTW Message Board / Purdue student paper interviews Cincinnati editor about Butch Jones
|
on: December 07, 2012, 03:47:48 EST
|
http://www.purdueexponent.org/sports/article_ed54e289-c703-5363-89a5-854ac2895bde.html I know that we are ahead of Purdue but I think their questions are relevant to anyone he will be coaching. Q&A: Getting to know Butch Jones Posted: Friday, November 30, 2012 10:00 am | Updated: 7:42 pm, Sun Dec 2, 2012. By Travis Baugh | Assistant Sports Editor The Exponent talked to Josh Miller, the sports editor for the Cincinnati student newspaper, The News Record, to discuss Cincinnati head coach Butch Jones, who appears to be the frontrunner for Purdue’s coaching vacancy. The Exponent: Cincinnati sports talk show personality Andy Furman tweeted that Jones will be the next Purdue coach. What kind of buzz has been around Jones and the Purdue job on campus? Miller: To be honest, there has been a lot more buzz about coach Jones and the possibility that he would take the Kentucky job, which has since been filled by Mark Stoops, or the vacant Tennessee job. With all due respect, the general feel around campus is that the Purdue job would be a step down from Cincinnati based upon the recent success here. However, this is a university that has lost two very successful head coaches in the past decade in similar situations, with Mark Dantonio going to Michigan State and more notably, Brian Kelly who is about to play in a national championship game with Notre Dame. Part of the culture here is to be concerned about any job opening a UC (University of Cincinnati) coach is linked to, so whether it’s a step up or down there is definitely a lot of concern about Jones being connected to the Purdue job. Not getting into the ACC this week has kicked the concern up a notch as well. The Exponent: After going 4-8 in 2010, Cincinnati has a 18-6 record under Jones. Is this a product of inheriting a lot of talent from former coach Brian Kelly, or does Jones receive a bulk of the credit? Miller: Cincinnati’s success during the last two seasons is by no means a product of inheriting talent. The cupboard was very bare when Butch got to UC; I believe there were only a handful of seniors on the team in Jones’ first season. Obviously, there were five or six NFL caliber players left over from the Brian Kelly era, but the overall depth on the UC roster was very poor. He also recruited what most around here consider to be Cincinnati’s best ever recruiting class. The Exponent: Is Jones perceived to be a players’ coach, or what kind of view do the Bearcats seem to have of him? Miller: From the time I’ve spent at practices and camps, I can tell you that he runs a tough practice, but it seems as if more players than not view him in a positive light. The Exponent: Cincinnati has struggled to fill the 35,097-seat Nippert Stadium. Does Jones have fans excited about the program? Miller: It’s an issue Jones has harped on quite a bit since he’s been here. UC is a very unique situation because the football program here was very poor for a long time, but the last five, six or seven years have been extremely successful, including an undefeated season and a couple of BCS bowl berths. As a result, a lot of the fan base here is relatively new and aren’t as inclined to come to games that don’t carry much weight.

They're saying Tennessee better hope Michigan beats Ohio State in the next two years. They think that if Michigan Coach Brady Hoke gets fired Butch Jones will go to Michigan in a New York minute.
They've been saying the same thing about Les Miles for years.

Our goal isn't a ceiling of 3 losses a year. If it is we just hire Fulmer.
You really think Fulmer could come back and go 9-3 with this team? Next year? 2 years from now? 5 years from now?

Sports / VTTW Message Board / We have some Volunteers for the open head corch position

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2012/12/5/3733946/charlie-strong-tennessee-vols-players-seize-opportunityCharlie Strong will reportedly not leave Louisville to take over the Tennessee Volunteers. This follows Mike Gundy not leaving Oklahoma State, Jon Gruden not leaving ESPN, and any number of other people not leaving their current station in life in order to take over the Vols. With only a name or two left on the current Tennessee list as best we know it, a number of proactive Vols players have overthrown the athletic department and begun distributing power amongst themselves. That's not what actually happened, but at least they're having more fun with it than most Vols fans are. Defensive back Byron Moore leads the charge, with running back Tom Smith and cornerback Prentiss Waggner putting in for roles on his staff (ht Holly Anderson): forgoing my senior year to become head coach at the university of tennessee — Bmoore (@bmoore3vfl) December 6, 2012 Ur gonna be great 4 this university RT @antonio_tiny74: Proud to announce that our new head coach is @bmoore3vfl! Big difference: Snyder wasn't fired after his first tenure at K-State. He retired, and he was still in good graces with the University, so much in fact that they named the stadium after him. He wasn't a divisive issue among the fan base as Fulmer was and still is.
Hiring Fulmer again, even though he is a Vol through and through, would be like giving up.

I saw it on another board and keep hearing vague references to our "issues on the administrative" side. With a resume/bio like that I doubt she cares much about football. That's right! Her bio says nothing about her abilities to make a sammich!

Sports / VTTW Message Board / Re: If CCS doesn't come to UT,Hart needs to go ahead and call Petrino
|
on: December 06, 2012, 02:29:32 EST

You've got to look at the totality of Petrino's work.
1) Everyone agrees he wins BIG. Remove the personal stuff and we're probably pretty much in agreement no one is a bigger homerun hire. For crying out loud Arkansas finished #5 in the country last year.
2) Everyone agrees he would be super cheap.
3) You can't bring up the Falcons incident without noting a more recent one. Namely that he would have just finished year five at Arkansas were it not for the motorcycle/woman/whatever deal. That might be the profile of a reprobate, but it's no the one of a job hopper. How many of you reading this have as many or more job changes than Petrino in the last five years? I do. He's got one, and in that case he was relieved of his duties (admittedly for cause).
He's super cheap because he is a POS. He ends up being despised by everyone at each of his former jobs. Hiring Petrino would be OK for a few years and then his poor character would come through and he would do something stupid. It's always something new so the mind boggles at what he could pull off at UT. DUI maybe? But something indicative of sorry character. It always shines through.

Davis has pretty much been cleared of wrongdoing. I know...not ideal still, but we just had a UL football coach tell us to take a hike after we offered him 4 million
Butch Davis has been cleared in the same sense that OJ and Casey Anthony were cleared of murder charges.
